If this is true this could really biite.

Cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sale calls. You will be charged for these calls. Call this number from your cell phone 1-888-382-1222. It is the national DO NOT CALL list. It only takes a minute of your time. It blocks your number for 5 years. Please pass this on to everyone you know who doesn't want to be hassled. You may also register online at http://www.donotcall.gov/

I'm glad I prefaced it by saying, "If this is true..." ;)

Move along folks there's nothing more to see here!!!

I was in England in April and I recall my friend complaining bitterly about all the unsolicited 'adverts' he was receiving on his cellphone.

Holger, do they get charged for incoming calls, though?

I'm not sure. I'll ask him tomorrow. I just remember him cursing at 3 of every 4 calls that rang in and when I asked him why he didn't answer he said it was just 'adverts'!

Here is an interesting poll result about adding numbers to a "do not call" list which, apparently, really does exist.

Do you plan on adding your cell phone number to the Do Not Call Registry?

My question is: Why do 16% of respondents consider it unnecessary? Do they actually LIKE getting junk phone calls?

Holger, I remember getting a few telemarketers a day on my line phone, before the Do Not Call list went into effect. What a relief that was! And my answering machine would go on and the telemarketer would cut right off. I just hated having them grab my attention for nothing.

Gaj, there are two kinds of lists -- for line telephones is one thing, but for cell phones is unnecessary, because you would have to opt in if you want commercial messages. Even for line phones, some areas get way more calls than others.

What Esav says is from Federal Law, IIRC... Cell #'s can't be legally released unless you are asked by your service provider and give permission to publish or sell cell #'s...

Just spoke to my friend in Horsham. He said that 'adverts' incoming from his service provider (and there are lots of them!) are obviously not charged for, they're just annoying. However, 'adverts' from telemarketers (maybe I will coin the term 'cellemarketers' for cell phones!) ARE charged to his acccount if he answers them.

If this sort of thing becomes common, we'll need a Bleep button on cellphones -- push the button within the first couple of seconds, and the call isn't charged, and the caller gets a multidecibel screech!

My Cell phone can be set to only receive calls from the stored list, so while being on the Do Not call list would be a extra pre-caution it would not be required ? Maybe thats what they were thinking. or they could be like my brother who likes getting calls just so he can sit around and screw with the people calling.
