I need a cell phone and a service provider. Who, what and where? I know they are made so little anymore and all I want is a basic system that that I won't loose easily. I don't know alot about these companies but is there a reccomendation you would go with?

Best service is Verizon in your neck of the woods. As for phones, this works out. Most of the "free" phones (the ones that costs nothing after rebate) when you sign up for new service, are usually bulky and lacking features, although not by much these days.

Just a cautionary story. I originally went with WorldCom. Hehe.....

We got a nice letter saying "Uh, we're bankrupt...thanks for the buisness".

Months later we got a bill from another company who had bought a bunch of Worldcom accounts. (we had not used the phone since getting the original letter) They wanted money for three months service. I was not kind, and charges were dropped.

We went with Cingular, who is a "preferred supplier" at the university. We get a discount. I kept the original phone for nearly two years. Works great, except at my house.... They tell me I'm eligible for an upgraded phone. I call, and I find that I can get an upgraded phone, IF I get the upgraded service as well.
So my "free" upgraded phone would cost me 10 bucks a month more.

No thanks.

Our other preferred supplier is Sprint...I may give 'em a call.

I've been pretty happy with Sprint. Now that they've merged with Nextel, the coverage should get even better.

Go with the best service for your area. I believe Verizon was mentioned. I just switched to Alltell because they have more towers where I go. Take your time in looking. ask people you meet if they are happy. I personally did 6 months of research before I switched.

Cindy, I sent you some info on our coverage in your area. Any more questions let me know. :)

Verizon and Motorola. Outstanding combo that I used for many years and couldn't have been happier. On top of that, customer satisfaction polls strongly support this.

Avoid Nextel. They suck in so many ways. I'm litterally counting the days until I'm out from under their contract. 124 Days.

I like Sprint well enough. I haven't had any major problems with them thus far, and the free phone was a good one.

I have T-mobile myself. Infact, I just got signed up about three weeks ago, and got a Motorola v188. It has more features than I need...

Ask your friends and neighbors for the best service. Ask: Is there anywhere where you consistently cannot get service. do you ever have dropped calls. Do people ever call you and have your phone not even ring? Do people ever complain that they can't here you well? Then go online to say www.howardforums.com and find out which phones for that service have the best radio in them (they will sometimes say that phone has the best rf). The reception that you get varies a lot from phone to phone within a provider. for verizon i like the moto v710 or e815. they have very good reception. the 710 has an analog backup (which may or may not be used much where you live). try searching the forums here. also, i would recommend buying from a direct retailer (say a verizon or t-mobile store) rather than a store that carries lots of different brands. that way you can go see customer service people there and they will be able to see your original purchase. you may however, be able to get an incredible deal on amazon.com. They sometimes have really excellent prices. i would take a look before you purchase whichever phone you pick out. you can sometimes even get money back. also, a one year contract may not be a bad idea. there will usually be a 175 dollar early termination fee if you cancel early. the difference in phone price between a one year contract and two year contract may be minimal, but that freedom is nice to have. it's good bargaining power too, being able to say that you can go to one of their competitors if they're giving you a hard time.

Pete
