Our plan recently expired and we are on month to month with Verizon. The specific question is related to my son. He is in college, so we are paying his cell phone and he is on our family plan. He has an ancient blackberry that has quit taking a charge so I need to get him a new phone. I'm paying so I want cheap :).

He doesn't use the internet on his phone. He has some fancy AlienWare laptop for that kind of stuff, so I don't think he needs "multimedia" or data packages, etc. He basically uses it to text a lot and to make one call a week to his dear old parents. Therefore, probably should have a qwerty keyboard.

Any recommendations for a relatively straightforward phone?

thought about a new battery? If the phone is in decent shape that may be the cheap rout. ATT might also offer you a decent deal to switch. Good time to do some checking

I loved my LG enV2. Whatever you do, don't get the Samsung Rogue. Mine has a ton of problems. For texting and not having to be stuck with a data plan, get the enV3. Awesome phone.

Cheap and Verizon don't exactly mesh well. I swear they nickle and dime ya quicker than a car salesman :\

If you are sticking with Verizon, I'd guess the enV3 would be your phone of choice, good phone with a qwerty keyboard but doesn't require a data plan like a Blackberry would.

I have a very simple Nokia, model 1600, for texting and calling only. It is cheap and the battery is quite good, I have to recharge the battery every two and sometimes three weeks. But it doesn't have a qwerty keyboard...

The Verizon website has a handy feature to look at all the phones they currently offer and a comparison tool for the features. It is easy to use, I haven't talked to a human to pick out a phone in roughly six years. If you are month by month, you might look at some newer family plans, you'll likely find better deals than existed two or three years ago, for less money.

Thanks guys. I will check out the Verizon site. Matt is home this weekend for Feb. vacation.
