Today I was using 91% rubbing alcohol to clean the handles of my swiss army knife. When i put the alcohol on the handle the top bit of plastic got really soft, and when I touched it, it scratched very deeply and easily.

I just wanted to know if any others have noticed this?

Soap and water are your best bets . The Eco scales are nylon and much more resistant to solvents .

Better watch out for all insect repellants as well - the old stuff like jungle juice and Cutter's deepwoods really make jelly out of the scales! I speak from experience here!

if it's not too far gone, minor surface scratches can be worked over with the slightest amounts of fine grade auto paint rubbing compound...
apply fresh compound on to unused clean areas of rag before continuing on to new damaged areas of the scale.
progressively apply lighter pressure on the rubs, as friction builds up heat and deposits the abraded red scale material on the rag and will affect the entire newly polished surface...
remember, just a little at a time as this action is abrasive in nature.

Yes alcohol and acetone do not mix well with SAK's.

Add blue loctite to the list of things to keep away from your celidor SAK.

I was just using some off-brand blue thread locker and I got some of it on the blue transparent scales of my 58mm Manager. I thought nothing of it, but then I noticed a minute or two later that the scales were starting to dissolve in the same way that happens if you get isopropyl (medicinal rubbing alcohol) or acetone (nail polish remover) on them. I had to run to the sink and rinse it off.

THIS!

I destroyed the scales on a SAK when I was fishing, and used some strong mosquito repellent. The scales really melted with a high Deet percent. When fishing or working in the garage, go with alox.
