Do the cellulose handles have issues over time? I'm looking at adding a couple to my just started collection and maybe as stocking stuffers for Christmas.

I seem to remember someone on another board mentioning they wouldn't last over time.

???

Do you mean "celluloid" instead of "cellulose"? :) If so, you're remembering correctly that handles made from the material have a tendency to deteriorate over time. Here's one thread on it with some good links and info:

Also, you might get more/better responses if you posted your question in the Traditional Knife Subforum, since celluloid handles are common on "traditional" knife patterns (stockmen, trappers, toothpicks, etc.) but almost nonexistent on "modern" knife styles.

Finally, welcome to BladeForums and to the world of knife collecting! Your wallet will hate you for it. ;)

Thanks for letting me know about the traditional forum, I appreciate it.

I've been haunting this site for a month and missed that one completely.

I inherited this old inexpensive Barlow from my grandfather after he passed away years ago. I believe it to be around 40 years old now, and the handle still looks and feels like new.

Grampa used it plenty back in the day. Then it sat out in my mothers garage for about twenty years before I got ahold of it. It was pretty much a solid chunk of rust before I cleaned it up and restored it. I still throw it in my pocket and use it every now and then.
