can anyone suggest some tips for repairing celluloid?

I recently got an older teardrop jack, with butter and molasses type celluloid.

It would appear that someone had dropped it, or something onto one of the scales, there is a significant ding, and part of the celluloid has broken away from the metal...

Thought I'd better ask before I start filling that chip with plastic type repair material...don't want to melt the celluloid!

You can add watercolor(kind that comes in tube...don't add water) or artist acrylic paint to tint the epoxy so it matches the celluloid color. Don't use too much paint or the epoxy may not harden properly.

Celluloid degrades in the manner you are describing. It checks and appears shattered. If this is the case with your knife, do not store it near any other knives. The fumes from the degrading celluloid will cause rust. It would be better to remove the degraded scale altogether.
