This didn't turn out exactly the way I expected, but I like it anyway. I was going for more of a mammon axe look and what I got was more of a wagoner's axe. It was inspired by a video that coal creek forge did a little while back about axes where the bit extends beyond the end of the shaft, and in that capacity the design was a success.
The head was forged from 1075/1080 steel, which I burned through the handle (carved from a sledge hammer handle). It's secured with a steel pin, epoxy and rawhide. The shaft is 16" with an overall length of 18.25". This was mostly meant to be an experiment, so the forging and finish aren't pretty. It's sturdy, though, and it cuts well. I stained the handle with wet coffee grinds and put two and a half coats of tung oil on it. It weighs just a hair over 15oz and balances about 3" below the head.
