Centofante 3 blade play?

Hey everyone. I'm new here at BF, and new at knives as well, and I had a question about my Centofante 3. I purchased it a while ago for EDC purposes but didn't like how the clip was positioned (pivot-side), so I held off on it for a while. I finally got some torx drivers recently and moved the clip to tip-up carry. However, after doing so, I realized that there was some vertical and side to side blade play that was non-existent before I moved the clip. Did anyone else with a Centofante 3 have this problem, or just me? If so, was there anything you did to fix it? Thanks.

Welcome to BF. I also moved the clip on my Centofante 3 from tip down to tip up. Mine has no noticeable side to side or vertical play. On mid-lock designs it's almost always possible to force some vertical play if you try hard enough. A little side to side play generally isn't a problem either.

However, if it wiggles freely or is so loose you fear the lock may disengage then it's a problem. I don't know how you could go about fixing the vertical play and since it's pin construction there's no simple way to deal with the side to side play either.

But, you can tighten the blade by tapping the pivot pin lightly with a hammer. Place the knife so that the pins are sandwiched between some relatively soft material like wood and then tap it with the hammer to get the desired results. BE CAREFUL. It's easy to do too much and it can't be undone.

A better option might be to send it back to Spyderco. They have a great customer service department and I'm sure they'd take good care of you.

When the clip is in the tip-down position, the clip screws pull on the liners a little bit. That can account for some minute discrepancies when the clip is changed to tip-up.

Thanks for the advice! Kinda scared to do that hammer thing though... knowing me, I'd do much more damage than good. The blade play's not actually that drastic, it just bugs me. I guess I'll just have to live with it... or move the clip back or something.

Call Spyderco. If it bothers you then it's a problem. Tell them what the problem is and see what they say. They really do take good care of their customers.
