First off, let it be said that I love this knife. I bought it just before Christmas and ever since then, it and my blue Delica 4 ffg have been dominating my EDC rotation. I really like the smooth FRN handle and the little palladium spider logo, how light it is without feeling cheap, and the handsome VG10 blade slices like a freakin' laserbeam. There's just one concern...

Examining the knife when closed, I'm noticing that the blade tip favours the nested liner side of the handle. Looks like the FRN has been just slightly shaved on that side also, so now I'm concerned that the blade may eventually chip on the liner. Note: the blade locks up tight when deployed with zero play in any direction.

Is this simply caused by blade flex (it's super thin stock) or is there a problem with the pinned design (mine was born in October of 2010)? Should I send it in to Spyderco? My Native 1 is pinned as well, and it's rock-solid in every regard.

It sounds like a legit concern to me. My personal experience with Spyderco CS was excellent, so I have no problem saying send it in. Pics are always helpful tho if you want the best advice. ;)

After reading your post and examining mine, I see that mine is the same. I can also see the FRN shavings down inside the handle. Please post after speaking with Spyderco CS.

I had one around 2003 or so. Very nice and handsome knife. Like you said, cuts very well. My little spyder fell out, but I just super glued it back on. Sold it few years back, regret it ever since.

Tip up carry is very discrete while still packing a fairly long edge.

I use mine every day and open and close it dozens of times. Still very tight and very sharp, no centering issues or bug falling out. Has only seen an x-fine DMT stone 1 time and stropping keeps it zipping along. I put a zip-tie ghetto wave on it last week, I'm going to remove it, but man that sucker realy snaps open now! Love my CF-3 :D

The shaved FRN is normal. If your knife is locking up fine, and the blade isn't actually touching the liner when closed dont worry about it and enjoy your knife. Keep an eye on it, if in a month it's closer to the liner than it was before you may want to e-mail Spyderco, but in the mean time, use your knife, it sounds fine to me :)

Thanks to all for the feedback! :)

I like to think that I gave my C3 a critical 'once-over' when I first got it, but it is possible that I overlooked the condition of the FRN near the tip. The blade shows no sign of any abrasion... yet; could be too soon to tell if it's actually rubbing against the scales or not (even if it is obviously coming very very close.) Being a righty, and because the blade is so thin, maybe I'm putting too much pressure on the blade while closing it?

I'll keep an eye on it and will contact Syderco if the problem gets worse.
