I'm trying to develop my sharpening skills. Got and Edge Pro Apex and have been working at it, but I've got a ways to go. I was wondering if any of you who are "old pros" at this lived in central or southern Indiana and wouldn't mind if I came by and watched you at work.

what kinda problems are you having with your Edge Pro Apex? I though they were pretty fool proof. it looks like there is very little play where the rod goes back and forth as as long as your getting to the edge, you should be golden.

I wouldn't say I'm having a problem. I'm just new. I'm getting pretty close, but not shaving sharp yet. I don't know if I'm a little uneven or leaving a burr or what. I just figured if someone was close I might watch a veteran at work and pick up a few tips. It doesn't even have to be with an Edge Pro.

It's actually kind of wierd. It's like I'm sharper after the course stones and it gets duller as I try to refine with the finer stones. I don't know if I am moving through them too fast...not fast enough...or maybe I'm not getting rid of the burr. Maybe the next step is simply finding some good magnification so that I can see better where I'm at before moving on.

the angle of the new stones may be a bit off. I'd suggest using a sharpie between stones to see where exactly they are contacting your blade and see if your really getting to the edge. I was having that problem when I used my guided sharpening system (a lansky deluxe, it was a long time ago). I could never figure out how to get the damn metal rods to line up exactly the same way each time and then they would occational bend and/or move around in the guide holes... what a fken headache and waste of time!

I have a different sharpener but the exact same problem.

doriandk, i'm in ohio just west of columbus. if you want to come over sometime i can show you other ways to sharpen. after years of sharpening by hand and with a guided system, i now use paper wheels that were shown to me by friend who has been a knifemaker for over 20 years. check out these links. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=651061
