I'd like to find a local (Wausau-area) knifesmith that could help a newbie get started or at least let me watch in the background! Suggestions?

There are several knifemakers "up north" that you could contact. One is Ed Lary, I think he is still in Mosinee. Michael Watlett in Minoqua. I think Karl Zimmerman is in Arbor Vitae. There are more that I know I'm missing, but I'm at work right now, so I can't get to the info at the moment. If you are looking for an actual "smith" versus a stock remover, you would have to ask the individual knifemaker. Karl forges, that I know for sure. I'll come back to this post soon with some more info, unless someone beats me to it. Or if you have one of the "Knives" annuals, the info is in the back. Hope that helps. -Matt

Greetings,
I'll throw my name in the hat too, I live in Pittsville, south of Marshfield, west of Wis Rapids. I travel a lot for work, so call/e-mail to make sure when I'll be home.

I won't promise a fancy shop, but I have fun in it!

Ken Nelson
Iron Wolf Forge

Thanks, everyone.

Ken, I'm out of town on vacation the next few days, but would welcome the opportunity to come down and visit sometime - at your convienience. Could you perhaps PM with a phone #?

Dang it Ken! Your name was the one I was forgetting! :o I knew where you lived, but could not remember your name. I'll have to introduce myself at the Badger Show in the spring, if you are showing there again. Anyway, here are some numbers as of 2003: Michael Wattelet 715-356-9069, Ed Lary 715-693-3940, and I lost Karl Zimmerman's buisness card, so you'll have to try directory assistance, as of six months ago, he still lived in Arbor Vitae. I hope that helps you guys out. -Matt-

Thanks, guys ... I'll be in touch shortly!

BTW: When is the "big" knife show in Wisconsin? Are there any gun shows that knifemakers tend to show up for?

Would any of you cheeseheads be interested in joining Minnesota and Iowa guys in an association/guild type group?

I have a small humble shop in the Waupaca area(central Wisconsin). I would be happy to have a guest now and again. My main(only) focus at this time is slipjoints however.

Ken

I am in Star Prairie, WI. I would be interested in helping out. I have a humble shop Forge, some forge welding, as well as stock removal knives.

I have a humble shop (maybe not to some) and still dabble in straight blades once in awhile though most efforts now go into slipjoints. Some years I'll make a dozen or so fixed blades. Shoot me an email and maybe we can work something out I'm usually in the shop all day 5 or 6 days a week.
Ken.

Humble shop? I wouldn't say that. When you see what he can do from scratch you'll be amazed. Let us know and maybe you can watch us heat treat one of my "snow plow" blades as Ken calls them.

I've always been interested in learning the art of knifemaking. Does anyone know of someone in the Eau Claire or Menomonie area that is experience in making knives?
Thank you!

Maybe letting me come by their shop to watch them work and answer question.
I have recently started using straights and have an interest in restoration and making razors. Please contact me with any information
