I'm sure this has been asked before, but I can't seem to find an answer. How is the ceramic ball detent attached to the lockbar on the Umnumzaan?

a pockt is milled into the lockbar then the ball is swedged into place makning for an extremely tight fit that is nearly imposible to fail.

does the ceramic ball make a big enough improvement for me to choose an Umnumzaan over a large Sebenza?

I feel they are two totally different knives not having a clear "better" knife. I say go with the one you like the look of and feel. The Um is a bit beefier and I feel the sebenza is a little classier and people friendly. The sebenza also has the pivot bushing while the Um has the detent as you mention.

Personally, I prefer the sebenza. I like its simple and functional design. It is the perfect knife for me. What is perfect for you, only you can decide.

The sebenza is my first pick, guess itz old school, the umnum is 2nd somedays first cause on the scales and the grippy ness............

By the way, I have used both and the umnumzaan is my favorite cause when you relieve the lock it is perfectly smooth every time.

thanks for the pics! I have a few more questions now.

how come the lockbar cutout continues past the lockbar?

also, I've read there's some advantages to having the lockbar on the outside of the titanium slab, versus the inside. does anyone know about the pros and cons of lockbar cutout placement?

Well, with the cut-out on the ouside of the slab, it gets hung-up on the draw. I have an SmF, and it alwys gets snagged at the cut-out when drawing it.
The Umnumzaan always draws smoothy due to the cut-out being on the inside.
