I am just starting out making knives. i have been using some belts from the local hardware store and find that they are wearing out extremely fast. Would anyone know were i could find some ceramic belts (or other good quality material) in canada.

Not sure where in Alberta you are but both Calgary and Edmonton House of Tools have belts (though they are getting out of knifemaking supplies.) I also sell some - see the link to my site in my signature below. You might also try Acklands - what they don't have, they can probably order.

Try Jeff Diotte {Downie Knife Supply} 519-978-9387..Top Notch Guy to deal with.He did have a website but it has not been up for some time....

Lee Valley has the smaller sizes for 1"x30" and 1" x 42" grinders in all different grits. I have been happy with the quality.

Hey Guys....

Jeff Diotte has a wide variety of belts in stock..
He should have what you want.

He is the largest knife supply in Canada

As far as his website goes..
Hang tight we are working on that...

Yep Jeff is the guy to call. I've gotten alot of stuff form him over the years. He's also very helpful if you have knifemaking questions as he is also a knifemaker. Was a fulltime maker before buying the knife supply company.

Rob - Hi from Calgary!!

I haven't had a chance to drop by House of Tools for a while - work has been really getting the way. Are they planning to drop their heat treating portion as well? I was hoping to give them a try shortly and take a shot at stainless :D

I happened to notice you are from Cremona. You may know my brother-in-law, Randy Whitlow. I married his sister.

Hi Gord

I have to be careful what I say about H.O.T. because I obviously have no first hand information. Their knife guy, Phil, tells me they are getting out of knifemaking supplies completely. The steel they have is the last they will get - most of their nickel silver is gone and the brass is really depleted. The dymondwood is dwindling and I heard (not from Phil) that they won't be stocking 2 x 72 belts anymore - though I can't confirm that.

Please treat all this as unsubstantiated rumour and do your own research. I only mention it because some of this stuff may be hard to get soon. I don't stock a lot of stainless (some but not much), so that may mean ordering from across the country or across the border. Tool steel other than O1 is already nearly impossible to get locally.

I'm trying add the items that people want most to my small operation. Requests welcome.

Ok- thx Rob. I work quite close to there, so I'll drop by for a snoop in the next week or two, depending on work schedule, time, etc. and try to get some more info. That's really unfortunate...it was good place to go to get some pick up stuff - they were actually reasonably priced, all things considered.
