Okay, I'm convinced I need to go ceramic.

What's your best-priced / preferred source? Ind Abrasives doesn't have em, and TKS only goes to 80 grit. I think I want to go down to (up to?) 220 grit.

Any other discussion?

Thanks,
Dave

POP KNIVES & SUPPLIES. 706-678-5408, Fax, 706-678-5409. Try the new yelloy belts in 60 grit, I get almost twice the life rough grinding Talonite with them. (Thanks Darell) He has a good selection of all sorts of belts.

Rob, does the kind of steel you're grinding matter with the ceramic belts? I bought some 60 grit ceramics once and tried grinding some ats34 and 440c and they were garbage, wouldn't cut at all.

Take care!! Michael

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

I started using the orange 3m #977 belts years ago, found they outlasted Norton 10 to 1,These are 40 grit, used on stainless, for non ss,a different # works better, sorry I dont have it in front of me.

The new 976 yellow 3m (as Rob stated) are the cats a**
They do well on most materials.
The last a good long time on Titanium .. And other blade steels that are nasty to grind..

They seem to stay sharp longer.

Yep, Pop Knives is the place. I understand that some of the other supply houses get their belts from him.

As far as the ceramic belts go, if they start to feel dull, lean on them some more, I don't know what happens but they tend to sharpen themselves again or something. I was an unbeliever before I did this and applied more pressure.

Thanks everyone, I'll give Pop a call. The new grinder is awesome - I can grind a blade in about 2 hrs now! And do a better job. I just love this stuff, and it's only getting better.

Craig-

I was told that the dull abrasive will break away when more pressure is applied, thus exposing more new abrasive.

It seems to work

Ceramic and Trizact???

Apples and oranges. The finest grit ceramic I have is a 220 grit 3M Regalite. Trizact on the other hand may start at what, an equivalent to 320 grit or so and the A6 belt is an eqivalent 2000 grit or so? The trizact belts are good if you have a soft backing such as a smooth contact wheel. My contact wheel is a duro of 60 and they work well. They don't last any time at all if you try to flat grind with them. I guess one of those graphic platen pad things may help but I have never tried it. I do know for hollow grinding that the Trizact belts (along with variable speed) all but eliminate any hand work.
