Ceramic Blade Folder Suggestion?

My father told me he has always wanted a ceramic blade knife. I'm hoping to get him one for Christmas. Anyone have a suggestion for a $50 to $80 -ish ceramic blade folder? Lock type isn't important, blade length around 3".

I know nothing about ceramics, but I understand they hold their edge for a long time and you have to sharpen them with a diamond stone.

Thanks in advance,

Michael

Boker makes them and they can be found at just about any Cabela's for a good price.

Ceramic blades are supposed to hold their edge FOREVER, but have a high chance of chipping if dropped on a hard surface (what knife doesn't), and the only way to sharpen them if you ever had to is to send it back to boker.

Here is a link to cabela's with the two knives they carry:

Hope this helps, J.

Thanks. I may be up at Cabelas next week. I'll check these out.

BTW - Nice Sebenza in your sig line. I just got my first Sebenza last week. A large 21 as well. I love it.

like botosai said, they are supposed to hold an edge forever but i'm not sure about the forever part. i was sent a dull boker ceramic with a really dull edge that wouldnt cut at all. i have diamond wheels that i used to put a "working edge" back on. although i havent worked on it much after getting the working edge put on. i'm going to try and get it shaving sharp if possible.

I have a really nice ceramic gentleman knife by Kyocera. They come in 2 blade sizes: small (5cm) and very small. They also exist in two qualities. Mine, with the vaguely damascus-like pattern s said to be even more wear resistant than the cheaper one which should already be very good. I'm afraid however that even the standard knife will be outside your price bracket.

I had the Boker ceramic at one time. It did not just chip but the blade actually snapped in two. I cant say exactly how it happened as I was not present (last loaner!) to see how much side force it took. I consider it a good lightweight "dress" knife and mignt try the new style again sometime. I had no problem with it cutting anything I tried and it sure beat my Ti blade for "sharpness".

I don't suggest anyone get a ceramic knife. I had a boker... chipped the thing in the first year. Never got around to doing anything with it... Just threw it in a drawer. Wished I had never bought it. And that back when they were the new hotness and I paid a lot of money for that stupid thing.

Ceramic blades belong in vegetable peelers and mandolines--shrouded blades that are unlikely to be knocked into anything or hit anything hard. In knives they are mostly a novelty factor that are high in cost for a tool suitable only for light use.

At least now you can use the spine as a sharpener :D

> dagon, thoes are some sweet looking knives. how sharp are the edges?

dry shave sharp
and sharpness stays a loooong time
just be careful to only use it for cutting. No prying or hacking and then it will last a long time.

I purchased one from Phil Cressman of CeramicKnife.org and have been very happy with it. No it is not as tough as my Cold Steel AK-47 but it wasn't made to be. Use it as it was intended to be used and the edge holds up fine. Price is under $50.00

Great for slicing fruit without rapid browning but ceramic is extremely brittle and can snap if you put sideways force on it and the edge can chip very easily - forget about trying to sharpen one yourself unless you've got oodles of time and masochistic tendencies.

Thanks for all the info. I may consider getting him a ceramic kitchen knife instead based on what you've all said. I'd hate to see him break an expensive knife.
