Hi guys & gals this is my first thread post. I had a question and maybe someone can answer it for me. I am newer into collecting knives and still have alot to learn. Anyways I bought a ceramic blade made by Benchmark. I saw it on a website and was curious more than anything, and I almost didn't buy it because I know nothing about this company and don't care for Chinese knives. But to the point i carried it a couple of days and only used it for light tasks like opening a couple of packages in the mail, and the blade chipped at the tip and along the belly. I was just curious if anyone had any information on the performance of ceramics and what role it should be used in.

Thanks,
Nic

keep ceramics in the kitchen. they tend to be way too brittle for EDC usage even light usage it seems. Like you saw, they chip easily and are a serious pain to resharpen because of their high RC rating. Steel is the way to go, or any alloy within the 45-64RC range not 80++ like ceramics

I thought ceramics were only for kitchen use on soft items like Veggies and meats that dont touch the bone..

Ceramic blades are used as scalpels in sensitive reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. This is because the edges are 100 times the sharpness of any metal blade. The healing from these blades are also phenomenal. They do chip. I have several small razor blades and I supply them for SERE kits as well as use the blades around my house. They cut very well and do not stain fruit and vegetables which is why they are used a lot around the kitchen. I have had good results from using them but you must remember that they cannot be struck or used with any side force or they will chip. edge retention is also very high.

I will point out that when they chip it will result in a wicked serration that is super sharp. This is like flint knapping an arrow point from obsidian.

Thanks for the input. This knife in particular is a folder. I think I might just keep it on hand for food prep, or maybe just for the collection. I think the main reason i bought it was kinda as a novelty and to have for my collection, but it is a very sharp blade even with the chips.
