Savman - Spyderco experimented with ceramic blades in the early '80's. A great deal in fact. We were already making ceramic blade sharpeners, so it seemed to be the natural direction. We even produced a very nice ceramic blade, magnesium handle gentlemans's folder. Tak Fukuta was the maker and it was promoted under the "TAK" label. A nice piece if you can find one.
Ceramic has a great deal of potential and they are certainly improving all of the time. This is evidenced by Mad Dogs new stuff. Our niche is "High performance Matter Separaters", generally for specific funcions. Our knives have always been among the sharpest available. For the type of knives that we are making, ceramic, though it is superior to steel in many ways, was not superior in the ways that mattered most to us.
Boker and others are doing an excellent job in making this material available to those that enjoy the novelty and experimentation. I myself have enjoyed ceramic kitchen knives.
At least for now, we'll stick with steel refinement, and continue to develop cobalt, titanium and ceramic as R & D projects. If and when more effective developments occur, you can be sure we will play with it and give you the opportunity to share.
