Hey All

I need the low-down on ceramic blades. I've never owned one but I would like more details about it. Can it be sharpened ? stropped ? etc...
I'm just interested after seeing the Schrade SCH402L . I would like more info before I buy it , and other ceramic folders.

All info is appreciated

Thanks and have a happy Easter !

Niko

The best are not too bad [kyocera] but still tend to be brittle . Sharpening takes special care as scratches tend to be the cause breakage ,they suggest you send it out to sharpen.it's not as sharp a s a steel blade though retains it's sharpness longer.
I don't think it's nearly as practical as steel.

What are you trying to get out of a ceramic blade over a steel blade? Because the latter is much easier to sharpen.

Yes. The fascination with these things , to me, is inexplicable. What's wrong with steel? That's just me.

I'd stick with steel. A lot of extra care has to be taken with ceramic blades, not worth the trouble in my opinion.

A ceramic blade won't take torquing without chipping the edge. The blades are very, very hard compared to steel. The average home sharpening set up doesn't have stones hard enough to grind the blade. Poor sharpening technique can leave scratches on the surface that become stress multipliers in use leading to early failure.

On the plus side, a ceramic blade stays sharp longer than a steel blade because it is so hard and so wear resistant.

I'm not sold on them having longer edge holding outside of controlled tests and like, cabbage or something. We have a white ceramic vegetable peeler, it's covered in small chips and doesn't get used all that heavily. The cheap steel ones have held up much better. One made with a better quality steel would probably outlast the ceramic 100:1

No, the future is Stellite.

No. Wait. That's already come and gone.

Talonite?

No that's come and gone.

Unobtanium! That's the ticket. :p

if you know how to sharpen stay away from them, in my opinion a knife should be able to get you out of a tight spot and be reliable, thats why i just ordered a zt0200

What's wrong with a slipjoint? What's wrong with 440C? Why do you need one-handed opening? Stainless steel? They are all just sexy, new "things" knife fans chase after.

Just like ceramic blades. Difference is, is that ceramic blades don't really offer any long term advantage.

I use ceramic utility blades in my Meyerco assisted box cutter. They last many times longer than the steel blades and do not rust or dull easily.
Ceramic is, for me, preferable to steel.

Ceramic blades hold their edge longer, but a nearly impossible to sharpen without special hones (diamond). They are brittle, chip and god help you if you ever drop one - it will most likely shatter. Stay with steel!

I don't think the technology has advanced enough yet to make ceramics practical.

Emphasis mine, as that was my point. That said, I like 440c just fine and I don't need one handed opening...but it's kinda fun helps you keep all your fingers intact. ;')

*facepalm*

Oh, not again.....

Are there any other situations in which you could bring up your on-the-way 0200 and its magical save-your-ass properties?

I'm sure you could find a way to work it into a thread about anything
