I got a little kaowool happy and the half thick firebrick I intended to use for the forge floor raises the work too high, into the path of the flame. I have some 12 X 12 ceramic floor tiles, think that stuff would work? I'm highly risk averse where it comes to my health and wellbeing!

Dave I have thought about the ceramic floor too. I went so far as buying the 12 x 12 ceramic at the floor covering store and it melted at about 2200 degrees. It couldnt have been real ceramic or it wouldnt have melted. It didnt pose a health risk, just made a mess in the forge. Let me know what you come up with.

Just 'cause its ceramic Bruce doesnt mean it is a high temperature refractory. Essentially deorative ceramics, such as tiles, melt at a relatively low temperatrue (for ceramics) about like soda glass. Something like true porcelain would have a much higher temperature threshold before it softens, then melts. MUCH higher. Actually, the 1/2 inch thick shelves made for ceramic kilns would suit your purpose quite well(to the original poster). some are Alumina, some are silicon carbide. Even the alumina kiln shelves will deteriorated at the hot spot of a coal forge. The silcon carbide kiln shelves are pure adamantine and last forever in a fire pot. I have used both. (My wife is a potter :))

Thanks for the input, gents. What about stone? I have a small slab of granite that might fit, think it'd work? Sounds like bathroom floor tile might not be such a fine idea. :D
