What does everyone think about them? Pros/Cons. Would you cary one in the field why or why not? If not what would you carry?

Thanks for reading.

They work well for finishing an edge, but they don't remove much material in a reasonable amount of time. I prefer a small diamond grit sharpener for the field. Another idea is to pack an assortment of Wet-or-Dry sandpaper strips in your wallet or pack. If you have 80 to 600 grit covered you can do serious sharpening even on a damaged edge.

I personally dont like them. I dont really have a reason not to like them, i just dont. I would never carry one in the feild because the only ones i've seen are rods and real easy to break. I would just have my regular pocket stone. It works like a charm.

I thought you couldn't break them unless you used a hammer. Alumana 98% ceramic is suposed to be as hard as hell. how did you break yours?

Hard = Brittle. Ceramic is tougher than glass, but it breaks pretty easily. I like the model 510 from Eze-Lap (but the 520 might suit your style better). If I had to go cheap I might just carry a 501:

If you hunt around the net you can beat the prices listed on the eze-lap website above.

The fold-out type sharpeners are nice since they let you get your hand out of the way and give you a reasonably long sharpening surface in a portable size.

If you insist on having ceramic you could get the combination diamond/ceramic folding hone from DMT. I don't generally like the style of hone with the holes in them, but I own a couple of these:

I think these are really too short for any serious work, but you can even get key chain diamond hones. The Fine model might be useful in a pinch:
