Ceramic Platen Liners

My question is on the cutting of a cermic platen. Has anyone ever cut one and if so how?

My ceramic platen is going to be to long and must be cut too length.

While designing my own platen and not having all the final design work on the platen done, I still felt it necessary to order my cermic platen liner. My thought was that when I finished the platen I could JB weld it on there and be ready to go. :o

In the course of finishing the platen I moved one of the wheels and thinking this means maybe polishing the platen to remove just a little to get clearance on the length. (1/8"or less):foot:

Well this was a case of reading one spec and the brain seeing another. I needed a 2x5 but what I had looked at was a 1x5 and what I ordered was a 2x6

So I know need to cut about an 1' off of the platen.

Here is my thoughts I will attachthe cermic platen to a block of material and suspend it under water and cut it with a diamond blade. I am hoping the water will keep it cool enough that the diamond blade will slice right through it!

Anyone got any advice on the cutting of a cermic platen????????

I guess no one has ever tried to cut a cermaic platen liner! I will try the under water trick and will post the results as too wheter it was succesful or I broke it!;)

I used to use a piece of high temp glass from the local glass shop. Can't help ya but here's hoping for ya!

You can grind ceramic. I ground mine to round the edges. If you go slow and don't get it too hot, you may be able to grind off that 1"

I cut mine using my $88 harbour freight tile cutter. Worked like a champ.
Chris
PS I had first attempted to score it with a carbide scribe and snap like glass, Did not work out so well for me so went the tile cutter route.

I wish I would have thought of a tile saw! Maybe I will order a pyroceram sheet and cut my own to save $. Thanks, Chris.

If you go to a rock and mineral shop, they will have a diamond saw. They charge by the square inch (of the cross sectional area). I had a Silicon carbide stone shortened. The cross section was 1/2"X 2 1/2". The charge was less than $10.00.

i just remembered that I have a small wetsaw in my shop. I may have used it only a few times. Want to borrow it? Think you could meet me by I-10 somewhere on sunday afternoon? I'll bring it up to you if you'd like. I'll be heading west from Crestview. Just let me know

Thanks for the offer of the blade railrider. :thumbup:I have one of my own.

So it sounds like the underwater trick should work or at the very least worth a try! I don't have a wet saw so to speak but will attempt the cut under water! In fact I would have already attempted it but had to go to my daughter’s college graduation today at UWF. She received her bachelors degree in Nursing today and graduated scholastically highest in her class, magna cum laude!
YES I AM JUST SLIGHTLY A PROUD DADDY, (although she gets the brains from the other side of the family, looks too thank God)!
I have her two boys this afternoon so will more than likely be tomorrow before I attempt it!
I will try to get some pics!

Or troll the streets on garbage day & pickup an oven door

When I buy them, there is no stated cost for cutting, just for materials

- order what you need and make another knife with the time saved.

I live in a city with over 1 million people and have not been able to find a business that sells pyroceram or neoceram and if they do they want $50 for a bigger piece even though I just need 2x6 inch piece or they don't have it in stock and would not order such a small amount . Is this stuff much better then plain ceramic tile which I know I can get cheap and easy. With regards to oven doors/ fireplace door glass to salvage and such isn't the glass tempered and unable to cut ? I know Usaknifemaker sells them but is it worth it for a craftsman 2x42 or just use a ceramic tile .

I've bought Pyroeramic pieces locally 2x7" =$9
That is 2/3 s of the price Tracy sells them for and no shipping-customs fees which would easily triple the price.

The first glass shop closest to me that I picked from the Yellow Pages had some.

Since it was so easy to get, I've never tried to cut it.
-but some others in this thread have had success with wet wheel tile cutters

Is a ceramic tile flat?

What type of glass shop was it , in Edmonton everyone I talk to is retarded.

What type of glass shop was it.

Yellow Pages "Glass-Float, Plate, Window & Doors Etc."

Skip the autoglass shops

An independent shop, no franchise name
"fireplace glass" in their advertisement.

or
Find a store that deals with wood stoves and fireplace inserts
and ask them who they deal with

Ok thanks , I've went to and called like 8 places so far 2 said they order it in and won't do such a small amount . At this rate I might as well use a ceramic tile or add it to an order next time I need some supplies.
