Ceramic rod use

This may seem to be a silly question, but how do you use a ceramic rod? I have an 3/8X41/2" From Ragweed forge, and I'm not sure about it's proper use. Do you hold the blade stationary and move the rod along the length of the blade, or is there some other method that is used? :)

I've used something similar (a ceramic insulator) by holding it stationary between thumb and index finger.
 
Maybe I'm a little dense, right brain/ left brain dominate? I have to see it or get a detailed description. If you move the knife and keep the rod stationary, do you fasten to a flat surface? If not it would be the same as stealling a blade. Sounds workable on short blades, but what about a BK-7? Pictures would be great.
