my first post...lots of info!
i'm looking for the standard 5/16" dia. 9 1/2" ceramic rods (alumina?)
wholesale...with or without a 'V' base. anyone know of a course grit,120+,-
rod for dull, nicked edges? same diameter and length. long lasting or cheap?
the course grit has always been the weak point in the 'V' sharpening systems. the diamond coated has been a dis appointment, not lasting vs. price. i've heard of a new (carbide?) spray that is holding the diamonds in plac much, much better,if it's true. any help?

thanks, ulua

Welcome to the party. Can't help you with your search but there is probably a ceramics industry trade group somewhere that has the info you are looking for.

I have purchased Ceramic rods wholesale from this gentleman.
Idahone inc Fred Van Dusen

The rods I use are finer than you want but very high quality and it would be worth calling him.

IIRC, the only really coarse V-base rods I've seen were el-cheapos (not something on which I trusted the quality enough to buy). So I can't give you any manufacturer or model names, sorry.

Smoky Mountain Knifeworks has the two ceramic rods linked below at cheap prices relative to the rest of the market, but not wholesale that I know of. Also, these are fairly fine grit ceramic rods.

Tennessee Big Stick™ Ceramic Sharpening Rod (about the diameter and length you are looking for, price = $0.99 each)

Big John Super Stick™ Ceramic Sharpening Rod (really fat crock stick with a wooden handle, $6.49 each):

If you are interested, you could contact their corporate headquarters to see if they will quote a wholesale price/quantity for you. They list dealer numbers, so it looks like a good bet.

I'm not sure where in the world you are located. But you could check your local Yellow Pages phone book (or equivalent) for abrasive wholesalers. If those listed don't have the particular products you seek, they may be able to point you in the direction of someone who does.

RokJok, the Tennessee big stick looks great. Any Idea what the grit is. The ceramic steel that came with my edge pro is 1200 and at .99 I could get a few more in case mine hits the floor or to give away as gifts for the people that want me to sharpen their knives now that they've seen mine.
