Ceramic tile question

Hi guys,

I have been taking a break from knifemaking for a while, but the bug has bitten again and i have been making for the last couple of weeks. I have always done hollow grinds and have decided it was time to get into the flat grinds.

I have been using graphite material on my platten, but it hollows out quite quick.

I have read about quite a few guys using tempered glass and HT'ed steel with varying results. i have also checked out the ellis site, but the cost of shipping to South Africa negates this option.

My question : Can i use a ceramic tile (like for kitchen & bathrooms) for my flat platten?

My thinking was glazed ceramic tiles a quite hard & flat, easy available and very cheap (compared to the other options). I am a bit worried about the resistance to heat building up though.

I've heard of people using tile like you suggest, with good results. I doubt the heat would be an issue with the tile itself, in fact the smooth surface helps to reduce heat build-up. Use a heat-resistant adhesive; JB weld has worked great for me with the "fireplace glass" piece on my platen.

Just thinking out loud, hope this helps.
