I've been using the V-stick type sharpeners from Spyderco and AG Russell and they are pefect for me.However, I'm looking for a simple type sharpener for non-knife friends as presents. I've seen these things that have two ceramic wheels you run the edge against. I realize that results won't be great but are any of them OK? I've seen a few different types and brands in Cutlery stores and on-line.

I own an assortment of these type of sharpeners and none of them have done a good job of sharpening the blade. They sort of scrape the edge giving it the impression of being sharp but in reality it is not.

A good book on sharpening might be a much better gift........

a simple arkansas stone would do a better job at teaching sharpening skill.

A strop would make a better gift. (works for me)

Tim, Lee Valley sells a sharpener of that sort that is made in France and appears to be quality made. Personally, I don't like them.

by simple geometry, in order for wheel type sharpeners to be effective, the wheels would have to be a few inches in diameter to be able to create an effective bevel or edge.

interesting idea there, MM.

Pendentive,
It's not my idea... ;)

I've seen quite a few very effective industrial grinding machines all having wheels 4 inches or more. The smallest effective edge grinding machine I've seen is the Tru-Hone.
I got my tru-hone when the deli I worked at went out of business and have to say it's the best thing I've gotten out of that job.
