This never crossed my mind, but how are ceramic knifes sharpened? It seems like they would require something totally different than steel...what is the deal?

Most people send the knife back to have it sharpened . I think they use just diamond but great care must be taken as scratches become stress riser leading to broken blades !! The best ceramic blades are those of Kyocera . I wouldn't buy any other and of the two they make the black ones are better than the white . Check their website for info.

I believe the machine sharpening would he done with something like CBN or a similar material. Diamond can abraded ceramic, but it doesn't do grinding well because diamonds have poor stability under heat. CBN is nearly as hard, and doesn't have the same instability. It is possible to sharpen ceramic using diamond belts, but the belts won't last too long. CBN can be used on steel or ceramic if it is properly affixed to the medium.

Note that diamond stones can also do ceramic, and won't have the instability issue, but I have heard nothing but bad things about the edges imparted through manual sharpening of ceramic.

You can't sharpen ceramic knives with steel.
I sharpen Ceramic knives with Ceramic belts and diamond is harder than ceramic so that will work as well. Mileage will vary. I've never been impressed with ceramic knives, even the black ones made by Kyocera.

I second this, I had a pretty terrible experience trying to sharpen a ceramic blade on my DMT stones.
