Someone told me that street lights have a small peice of ceramic in them, just wandering about that.

guy I used to work with carried one around. It was very, very smooth. It removed steel, but seemed finer than sharpmaker white rods.

Also, do you know where it is located in the light. What kind of light does it have to be (common or special)?

in the base, insulating between the center contact and the threads. I guess it's a 'special' bulb, they're pretty big.

What shape is it? Thanks for the help Hardheart.

Where's this thread going? Did it get darker at night near BJE's house and did the blades get sharper?

I use to have one cemented into a piston pin handle to use like a steel at work. Worked great. Very hard and delicate.

I have two of those that you are talking about (well one now since the smaller one broke) , a local knifemaker sells them at the gun shows here , mounted in a little piece of deer antler.

They work awesome.... The same concept as a ceramic rod. Clean them with Ajax when they get too dirty and be careful not to drop them on anything too hard.
I too , only know they come from larger bulbs.
I like mine because you can pack one while fishing/hunting/etc and use to touch up your blade/s as needed.

If your that interested post back and I will post a picture but right now I'm too lazy enjoying my morning coffee. :D

I would really like to see what it looks like, thanks.

Well, here is what the lamps look like http://www.planetnatural.com/site/xdpy/kb/hps-lamps.html
and http://www.lamptech.co.uk/SON.htm
they have a tube of polycrystalline alumina in the center that holds the arc. Some lamps use zirconia or an alumina-zirconia mix.

If you've got an old burned out bulb, why not... careful, mercury is poison and sodium burns and reacts violently with moisture. Otherwise it is probably just cheaper to get an alumina rod sharpener/steel
