How would you sharpen a curved edge with a Gatco style sharpening set and clamp? I'd like to keep the edge with the same angle if possible.
Also, how would one sharpen a knive like kershaw echo that has a pretty heavy recurve with a system like that? I've seen something that looks like that kershaw and I'd think it's pretty hard to sharpen with the Gatco.
Thanks for all the help. I'm loving this forum! :D

With really extreme curvatures, if you want to keep the angle the same all along the edge, you will need to clamp the blade in several parts and sharpen section by section.

I see what you mean...
Should I clamp the angle guide on an imaginary line that's somewhat like the red line on the diagram?

Pretty much yes, you just need to keep the hone working perpendicular to the edge, or as close as you can get it.

With a curved (or re-curve) blade, I think that you might be alot better-off if you use something like a Spyderco Sharpmaker, rather one of those fairly rigid clamp-on sharpeners (such as Lansky or Gatco).

Well so far I've only work on curved blades, which the gatco still handles pretty well. I'm mainly worried that if i get a recurve I wouldn't be able to sharpen it myself.
