Please excuse my ignorance, but I've been going nuts trying to figure out what kind of pocket knife this extremely talented man uses when he's building his birch bark canoe. If you've not seen this video then you can find it on YouTube and a few other spots. I believe he's using a canoe style knife but could be wrong. There are some close ups of the knife and I'll pause the video and study the knife, markings etc. then go looking to see if I can find a similar one. So far, no luck. So for all the genuine experts on this forum would you please help me out here?

Thanks,
WR

All the guys I know who build traditional bark canoes use a crooked knife. I can post a pic of one I made tomorrow if you like.

I make crooked knives and have for years. But that's not what I'm talking about. Cesar uses four cutting tools: an axe, a crooked knife, a large knife that looks like a kitchen knife, and the folding knife I'm referring to. No, this is some make of knife (perhaps a Case?) that looks to be a canoe style. Of course, this is just a wilderness, woods roaming freak asking a somewhat esoteric question. But I am referring to Cesar's folding knife, not his crooked knife. By the way, Cesar's crooked knife looks somewhat crude and close-ups of the blade show it's been rather poorely treated. His folding knife looks in much better shape. Regardless, he sure is one of the most talented birch bark canoe makers I've ever seen. Anyone interested in woodworking, bushcraft etc. should view this video!

Thanks for the video. I watched closely but you don't really get a good look at the pocket knife and I think he may have been using two folders. There is a scene about 20 minutes in that looked like and old cheap Forest Master type knife with a "leaf" shaped spear blade but there was a very short shot of it, i'll rewatch later. Nearer the end he was using a clip blade folder that looked like a better knife. Sorry, there just wasn't a good enough view to say what it is. One thing for sure, all his knives are sharp. The crooked knife is an interesting shape, very different from the normal shape of handle.
Would love to see some pictures of your crooked knives.

Best regards

Here are a few pictures of a crooked knife I made for an Ojibwa girl whos Grand Father was teaching her canoe building.
