Hi Gang. Who'd like to see some Emerson folders dressed in carbon fiber handles?
I would.

I can imagine it would be a bigger pain to QC and raise the price significantly. Personally I would be less inclined to use my Emerson hard if it had carbon fiber instead of G-10.

+1 for me. I prices would really jump up if they made them in carbon. It would have to be textured for me or else it would me more of a going out knife than one I bring to work. They did do some Christmas models with carbon IRC.

Yeah, I just came in here to post what Ray posted. I'd be interested but wallet willing I would get one.

If it was the textured carbon fiber that Souther Grind uses on their bad monkey, ide buy one or two

I could see them using the injection molded nylon/carbon fiber mix that Mr. Terzuola used on a couple of his folders:

It's feather-light and possibly stronger than the currently used G10, Mr. T ran over the proto with his truck and the scales held.

If they used a similar material it would be weight savings and just as strong. Of course there would have to be a price increase.

Meh....I have had so many knives with CF. From customs from Lambert and Moiser with Lightning strike carbon fiber to standard CF on production models. I have come to the conclusion that I dont like cf on a knife. It looks cool but sacrifices grip over other better suited materials like G10.

Here is some of them. Looks cool on knives you are not really gonna use. IMO.
I would rather have a Emerson choice of classic G10 or new grippy G10 on my Emersons. That old G10 is nice.

Not for me! That would be like putting chrome rims on a military Humvee!

Not me. I like CF, particularly the peel-ply used by spyderco, but only because it is lighter and as grippy as G10. Some of the CF options are pretty, but if I was buying for pretty I'd probably not be looking at Emerson anyway. I like Emerson's for what they are - solid, extremely well-designed, reliable, working knives. That is not incompatible with nice looking CF scales, but it would be neither necessary nor desirable for what is already an expensive brand. My $0.03 (adjusted for inflation ;) ).

Thanks guys.
CF is grippy and will not shred your pockets. I'd pay the extra $$.

I think it would fit best on the HD models that don't have the liner on the non locking side. Lighter and stronger than G-10 I think.

Lighter and stronger than G-10 I think.

It's not any lighter, because the weight of either CF or G10 is mostly epoxy that holds the layers of CF or fiberglass together.

"Strength" is contextual, CF is more rigid (rigider?) than G10, but also chips easier.

They could just offer replacement scales and let the people who want them pay a premium. I'd think that the 2014 and newer knives are consistent enough to offer replacement scales that wouldn't require fitting to the frame underneath, and the standoffs make it more difficult to notice imperfections in the fit of the scales to the frame.

I'd love factory scale replacements, their "jungle" and "desert" scales would be awesome...

Thanks, MSB.
So, chipping is the tradeoff with CF.
I'd still like to see EKI offer some folders in CF and see how they hold up.

More ridgid, that was what I meant. Didn't think about the weight being mostly the epoxy, good point.

The added ridgidity would be beneficial to the hd series but it might be a negligible difference anyway. The g10 is probably plenty strong for the application.

Rolf, get your hard wear yet?

btw, CF does feel lighter than G10, at least to me.
dr. No Hard Wear yet. I just made my order today. I had to re-order. NEVER send cash in the mail.

According to Sal Glesser (spyderco) CF is more structurally stable than G10 or micarta, despite all being resin composites. If so, then less CF may be needed, or less underlying metal, so handles may be lighter. Obviously CF comes in a variety of variants, so not sure how broad the brushstroke should be, but I can verify that at least on my spydercos (PM2, Manix2, Yojimbo), the CF scaled knives are lighter than the G10 comparables. I have a few other CF scaled folders and one is very light feeling (a Guardian Tac) and the other is very heavy feeling (the ZT/Emerson 0620cf) and if it is lighter than the G10 version, I don't notice (scales are thin on these, over metal).

Anyway, CF is nice stuff, and if Emerson wanted to offer swappable scales, I'm sure some folks would buy them. That would be a good way to make everyone happy :) Maybe.

Thanks, dog.^
dr. Yep, as of now, someone other than EKI, has $100. dollars. This is week 2.
MY mistake tho.

I don't know the weight of a Elmax blade vs a M390 blade, but for the production ZT0620, the CF version slightly less than the G10 version. That being said, give me an aggressively textured G10 handle any day.

ZT0620

Blade Length: 3.6 in. (9.1 cm)
Closed Length: 4.9 in. (12.4 cm)

ZT0620CF
