CG Folder 08

chisel grind? "shudder"

Full convex? Now were talking! :D

Do you mean chisel grind (edge ground on one side with the other side vertical) or are you referring to a tanto primary blade profile? I don't think SRKW will spend any hard earned R&D $$$ on either one of those designs. And to be perfectly honest I hope they don't. The Mini, SRKW's only tanto to date never made into production and I chisel grinds just aren't that popular. I don't find either to be practical for general use, but if you are looking at this from a military perspective, I guess they have their purpose. I had an Emerson CQC-7 tanto folder and I just couldn't find much use for it. And that blade profile in a steel like S30V is just destined to snap under lateral prying pressure. I don't think you'll see an SR-101 folder (or INFI for that matter) coming out of Wauseon any time soon, if ever. As far as we all know the Rat Trap is going to be our only fix for an Ohioan folder.

That said the Rat Trap is a superb folder. Solid lockup, excellent craftsmanship, S30V and a KILLER factory edge. I love mine and as you can see from the prices they go for (last one on Ebay went for $256) they are highly sought after.

Chisel grinds are like any other grind, ridiculously useful if you like them, distasteful if you don't :) Crooked knives are all chisel-grind, for example, and you can bet they're used for a lot more than just carving canoes. A chisel grind knife can whittle much finer fuzzies with the same level of control skill.

Can I have that in english?:o:confused:

Agreed! :p

Now, thinking of my leather tools, I believe I've got some chisel grind.

For a folder, I prefer flat or hollow (a la Sebbie.)

I agree - more folders from the Swamp would be great but, on a hunch, I wouldn't count on it. I think you've got better luck waiting for a Busse folder before another Swamp Rat and, even with that, I'm betting it will take something well more than "two weeks."

Then again... one never knows. ;)

I agree that the chisel grind has its place, but I just don't think that its place is on a general purpose folder. Crooked knives that canoe crafters use are extremely specialized tools. No doubt the chisel grind allows for some extra control and produces flat edged cuts when carving ribs , thwarts, etc. For woodworking in general the chisel grind is well represented on chisels (of course), drawknives, spokeshaves, planes, etc, etc. But specialized it is. In virtually any other situation from everyday whittling, slicing and cutting to survival situations I'd much prefer a more all-around edge profile than the chisel grind. Just my two cents.

If you've never heard of a crooked knife read John McPhee's Survival of the Birch Bark Canoe. It's an excellent easy read and by the time you're done you will know more about crooked knives than you ever thought possible. And check out the featured canoe maker's website (his name escapes me right now). He makes birch bark canoes the traditional way and they are truly amazing works of art. I think he is from Maine. Also read McPhee's The Pine Barrens if you want a little insight into the land where I come from.:)

I hope a new SRKW folder makes it's way out at some point...but not chisel ground.

A crooked knife is brilliant for carving canoes, spoons, bowls, traps, fuzzy sticks, and all sorts of other wood projects, and it's pretty useful for gutting and skinning too. But then when you think about it that covers a lot of things you might want a camp/bushcraft knife for. It's just lousy for chopping obviously. Perhaps it's not appropriate as a replacement for a folder, but I think in a 3-knife backwoods setup it could happily replace a Nessmuk-style blade.

I seem to be going off topic, I'll stop now :D

I'm curious! Gotta pic? I've got a couple of crooked knives but I have a feeling that they arent what your talking about. ;)
