Hi guys, new to the site. I have a CGBM and I have a kydex sheath with a teklock from mashed cat. Not too happy with the length of draw needed to clear the sheath. I have found a leather maker through ebay of all places, but he did'nt respond to my email asking for a price and info. Here is an example of the sheath he makes for the NMSFNO. http://www.customknifesheath.com/nmsfnoezsheath/

I'm very interested in a sheath like this for my CGBM. Would make drawing the knife much easier, and not to mention, it just looks awesome!

My question, are there any leatherworkers on this forum that could make something like this, and what would the cost be? Thanks for your time, McConnell

This isn't a "quick draw" sheath. His design is called "ez sheath" I like the idea of being able to draw it from my hip without lifting my 10 inch blade all the way out of the sheath. Its a very akward movement. I had a sheath like this for a custom knife, kind of like a gurkha blade style. Made it alot easier to draw and re sheath the knife. Just personal preference I guess, I put ketchup on my mac n cheese too!

""why anyone would desire a "quick draw" sheath. For what purpose"" Is not the business, I don't think, of anyone other than the guy getting the sheath. Not even the guy (gal) making the sheath. As mcconnell just said drawing a full sized blade, even from a drop loop type sheath, can be a contortionist's nightmare. You "might" not have meant to have your question/comment to sound judgmental, and it might not sound that way to others. But it did to me.

thanks for your time...

you need a dangler for large knives!

i dont think that that sheath would work for a cgfbm, the pic shows a natural outlaw (big knife but smaller that the battle mistress).

my biggest issue with the design of that sheath is that should that clasp fail the sheath is useless... anything can happen in the wilds or fighting zombies.lol

i have a CGFBM that i carry in a lowride leather sheath... the danglers move around too much for me.... i agree that a kydex sheath for the FBM sucks, unless you are carrying it on a pack....good luck!

rpalidin, In the future , please tread lightly when addressing Sandy Morrissey (swivelknife). Sandy IS the senior sheath maker around these parts having earned his credentials more years ago than you are old (probably). He is HIGHLY respected by all the leather workers who frequent this forum.

mcconnell, I checked out your link and from what I can see in the photos that sheath is really very well made from what appears to be best grade materials and as such the pricing is in my opinion very fair and could be a little low. You might get a taker or two to build one like it but you can actually see what you are getting there from a man experienced in making that style and my best advice would be to take the sure thing at the fair price. As a point of reference I would not build it if it meant copying his work and beyond that if I did, you'd really love his price.

Everything I've just written was meant to help and inform. I ain't mad at nobody.

Good luck, my friend.

Hey Mc,

Why didn't ya get Eric to set yours up with the drop rig like my NMFBM and the NMSFNO below? Cheap fix Bro and works great. He also has attachments/straps for leg tie.

I know of swivelknife, and have saved many of of his posts. HOWEVER the comment "" I can not fathom why anyone would desire a "quick draw" sheath. For what purpose? ""
has nothing to do with the tech of making a sheath, the usability or the artistic value of the sheath mcconnell was looking at. It did look like a no help, blow-off comment, (to me).

I don't think I was disrespectful at all, and for sure not of swivelknife's ability, or quality of his work.

and nothing I said here is meant to be disrespectful to you.

I maybe should have made my reply in email/PM. But there it is..

BTW Eric does great work in Kydex, and I will point him to this post, if you want...

Its a nice sheath, but if you want something custom I can hook you up with a hand sewn cross draw sheath for $75.00. PM me if interested.

Having made quite a few open spine sheaths I can safely say that retention is everything, a cord type loop doesnt inspire confidence, switch that with a couple of wide leather straps and some strong snaps and your on to something.

Cross draw, as Gerberblades said, is a very good idea. It makes drawing a long blade effortless and you can choose belt loop style as well. I wear everything, including small blades in a cross draw weak side carry. Its very natural to reach across the body to get the knife.

Guys, when Sandy speaks we all listen, when he has doubts about something its usually from experience in knowing what works and what doesnt, and that has everything to do with the tech of making a sheath. We make something that carries something that can kill us if it fails, responsibility falls on us to make something that wont fail.

to be honest, I did'nt see that he did that stuff until after i got my sheath. whoops!

Sorry, friends, I did not intend to ruffle any feathers by my statement on quick draw sheaths. In reading the link, it did state that the sheaths were just that and that it appeared to be the makers specialty. It has been my experience that the "quick draw" revolver, pistol, or knife means nothing, except in competition, as rapidity in the draw is rarely ever necessary even in combat. What really matters is the ability to use either in an efficient manner after it clears leather. A deliberately drawn weapon is seldom dropped and gives the user a clearer idea of what he is going to do with it when in hand. The old adage 'Haste makes waste' is as true today as when it was first uttered. Perhaps I have been a little judgemental but it was not directed to any individual. I do not believe that my question, "To what purpose?" was answered but perhaps the question would have been better not asked. I have seen where the extra second of thought would have kept a person from prison but never where a saved second saved anything.

Any sheath or holster that is made for the quick draw will sacrifice security in the retention department. I would sacrifice a little speed knowing that my weapon would still be there when reached for. The best way to shorten the draw time would be to use a shorter blade---my thought---not necessarily shared by many----lol ---Sandy---

I should have made my original post a little more clear. I asked for a leather worker that could make "something like this" not to duplicate his exact work. Like I said in an earlier post, I have a sheath similiar to the one I want made, and it worked fine. If and when I found someone to make it, I would have some sort of more reliable retention strap added. I was just asking if someone on here could make "something like this".

Edit: A blade this size is obv. not for personal protection, thats where my sig and training comes into play ;)

"The best way to shorten the draw time would be to use a shorter blade" I did'nt know that was the way people shopped for knives! haha (just messin with ya!)
