CGFBM feels/chops like....

Recently got my CGFBM and I was surprised at how neutral it was. My favorite choppers have always been blade heavy. I know some of you out there have a lot of experience with a lot of diffferent choppers. How well does the FBM chop and what other knife would you say it chops/feels like? Is it the "best" chopper out there in it's blade length? Do the Magnum scales make it noticeably more handle heavy?

Can't help out much here. I can tell you to thin out the edge though if you can. This will immensely improve your cutting efficiency. It chops O.K. It's no slouch, but it;s not a bolo either. I have a patrol machete that easily out-chops it and gives no blisters. However This is my second one because my first one snapped while lightly chopping a 2X4 it had serious flaws in the steel/HT. Anyway for it's size it does great and won't fail you. In-fact when my patrol machete broke I said, "now that's why I buy Busses." My friend rushed over to make sure I was O.K. as he saw the steel flying.

Mine CG chops about the same as my 15" BAS khuk, but not as well as my 15" AK khuk, it's all about the balance and the edge geometry.

While I can't help out with your specific question, I just thought I'd point out that being "blade heavy" or the location of the balance point do not necessarily correlate to chopping power. The "dynamic balance" is a different concept than static balance, and is mostly what controls the show when it comes to putting those ounces to work efficiently.

Oh no, not another one of these threads:D

I'm still waiting for someone to say that the new FBM chops better/worse than...

FBMLE
Basic 9
SWKW Battle Rat
E series BM
Straight Handled BM
SWKW Rat Daddy
SWKW Rat Mastiff
SWKW Battle Guard
Etc...

Thanks,

GregB

Don't forget the Dog Father. :)

Haven't used the std handled one yet but there is a noticable difference. I prefer the feel of the std but the balance of the mag

I thought I'd put that on the list. I'm trying to settle on one or two large choppers and I want to hear someone say how it performs (compared to others) before I drop that kind of dough. I had a standard scaled one and I sold it to free up the funds. I'm considering buying a mag handled one, but need to be convinced.

I have a CGFBM and a Dogfather, both with factory edges. The balance of the Dogfather is more blade heavy than the FBM. The FBM is the heavier knife of the two. The FBM is the better chopper. Bites deeper into the wood for the same swing effort. I think that extra mass makes the difference. On the other hand, I'd rather carry the Dogfather in my belt all day.

Justification to buy an FBM to go along with my DF. :D

I don't have that much experience with the FBM yet but so far, no other blade I've used compares. My various FSH's were No 1 but I have to put the FBM ahead. The balance, weight and geometry make it about perfect for me.

I just got a DF but haven't tried it yet but it feels like it might deliver almost the same momentum or cut as the FBM, but who knows. That handle really gives a good grip! Maybe too much. I'm think a lot of heavy work without gloves will leave blisters relatively fast.
