CGFBM or FFBM?

I am looking to pick up a Mistress to use for chopping/outdoor chores and have never had the chance to hold one. I am just looking for a little input/opinions on which you guys prefer. It looks like in all the pictures the FFBM is a flat grind?? I know it is noticeably thicker but as tough as INFI is then maybe i can get away with the thinner CG blade with the CBT. Any input is greatly appreciated. (and btw, i am sure this question has been asked before...be easy on me.)

-The LE is in BCS at the moment, and she is a Goliath and a fantastic chopper.

-The FFBM is gonna be a way better chopper than the CG, but the weight and quickness of the FFBM vs the CG is significant (CG being much faster and lighter) but still substantial for chopping.

-So, if you are looking for just a chopper, then Fat is the way to go... if you worry about packing light, and want to be able to do more camp jobs, then the CG is the way to go imo.

Get away with just a CGFBM? Dude they are freaking tanks!! CGFBMS are GREAT choppers. Most of that FFBM extra weight is superfluous.

Buying jjust one for work on the yard and outdoor chores? CGFBM and don't look back.

I've had both, and I've gotten rid of the Fatties. I beleive the whole point of a steel like INFI is that you don't need thickness to make up for something lacking. It's tough as hell. The ZT's were .187 and even that was okay for the FBM. Thick just makes it heavier and thicker edged. Some people say the thicker the better, but I don't subscribe to that. I avoid all the thick blades. The CG FBM is the coolest knife I own. Light, quick, agile, well balanced and plenty tough. I'd get MAGs though if I were you. The standard scales feel a little empty.

I might be persuaded to sell one of my CGFBMs for about the price of an LE. But no less. If one can be found for somewhere near what it sold for originally, I'd say CG is the way to go.

(This is not a "for sale" offer.)

I've only owned fatties, they are quite heavy. Wouldn't wanna be stuck with one in a fight - unless i'm fighting a tree - then it's all good.

My vote would also be for the CGFBM. Put a nice edge on her and she will sing along with all the FAT Ladies. The CGFBM with a nice edge put on by Justabuyer performed better than a stock FFBM. The CGFBM really takes a big jump in performance with a reprofile because the stock edge is thicker than the FFBM.

But if you want a tank and don't mind the weight than the FFBM would be just the ticket.

Best of both worlds would be to get both! Add a FBMLE and you will be all set ;)

Hey guys, thanks a lot for the input. I caught the fever not long ago and my Batac and Mud Razor just wont cut it any more.;) With a CGFBM now in my crosshairs, my next problem is figuring out which color combo i want on my ASH-1.

I agree with Ban I reprofiled my CGFBM and it will chop with if not outchop my FFBM. However I have not reprofiled my FFBM so it will be interesting to see how it does with a thinner convex grind. Both are sweet, for basic camp chores I like the CG, for all out chopping hard I like the FFBM due to the weight even if the CG will bite as deep.

I have both and I think I prefer the CGFBM. As mentioned above, it's much lighter and faster in hand than the FFBM. It's hard to go wrong with either, but if I could only keep one it would probably be the CG. I have mags on the FFBM and standard slabs on the CGFBM, but I find the latter more comfortable, probably because it weighs significantly less. The difference in thickness makes them very different knives, IMO. Plus, the CBT is cool as all hell.

I would say get one of each. That's what I did! And since pictures are worth a thousand words, here are some pics of my Battle Mistresses. FFBM with Mags, CG FBM, and ZT BM.

I haven't used the FFBM yet but it is MASSIVE. The ZT BM is my favorite Busse but it's almost too thin for the size of knife it is. The CG FBM has been the most impressive chopper I have ever used. My friends and I have beat the hell out of it and it is still sharp with no rolled edges nor depressions. It can be burried DEEP into a piece of wood without fear of damage.

If you have the cash, do't exclude the FBMLE.

The LE will out chop and out slice all of them and it's weight and balance are perfect IMHO. The LE is suprisingly more agile than the Fat Flats because of the difference in grinds (equating to the weight differences).

That said, the CG and the LE are my favorites:cool:

A reprofiled FFBM will perform slightly better than a reprofiled CGFBM purely because of weight. Not enough for me to pick a FFBM over the CGFBM in the field.

Well, I now have a .310 FFBM to go with my CGFBM. And I can definitely say I like the FFBM more. Much more, in fact. It is simply huge, but still not too heavy to be usable. And it chops like a viking war axe. It's just fantastic, and that's saying a lot, considering how much I like the CGFBM. I have one with G-10 scales, and it's really quite surprising how well they work in chopping, in spite of G-10 being very hard and textured. Didn't feel too much shock at all while chopping heavily.
