I have always wanted to try using a bow drill on chaga but always default to flint and steel when making fire with it. Turned out to be an easy, simple and fast friction fire method. Granted there are a bunch out there which could be easier still the Chaga friction fire has much going for it. Guessing that's why it has been done before in a multitude of ways. Just have a chuck of chaga which is large and stable enough to drill. Make a notch to start things going and presto. The coal is the entire chunk of Chaga which is notorious for NOT going out. Cut the smoldering embers off into a tinder bundle, in this case made for the bark of the very same tree which provided the spindle a few hours earlier. Blow into flames. If something goes wrong odds are the chage is still sporting a coal for a second attempt at blowing into flame.
I think with more practice I could consistently get this down to 5-7 seconds. Also want to try even woodier chaga.

Drilling away.
