All of my knives are potential users. Bought with that in mind, some of those knives are very or at least comparatively expensive. Some are rare, some are not. All are sharp to very sharp, and at least one scary sharp.

Recently cycled into my rotation for lunch box knife was a Mora, a knife many suggest to be one of the best bangs for the buck in knife world. A co -worker decided to not bring his knife to work the other day, he usually carries a very nice Kershaw. He asked to borrow my knife, specifically stating it was because I carried good knives and kept mine sharp. I wished I had one of my "better" knives to lend him, but handed him the Mora knowing he knew what he was doing with a knife. I was FOOLED! He instantly dropped down on one knee, placed a cigar on the asphalt, and sliced the end off. On the asphalt.

Lessons: 1. Just because a person carries a nice knife does not mean he respects his own or others knives. 2. Now, I know that I can get equally as regretful if my ten dollar knife gets damaged as if it were three hundred dollars. 3. On the other hand, I would still carry and use the more expensive knives, despite the proximity of idiots.

And, that is the point. A knife is a knife, and you can be proud of whatever knife you carry without worry. Just make sure a moron is not handling your knife, and you won't be labeled a moron for letting one borrow it.

Way to turn a negative experience into lessons learned. As for the other guy...you can't fix stoopid.

I would wait a day or two, then ask him to borrow his knife. I would find the nearest tree, and show him how a Kershaw does an imitation of a Cold Steel Tru Flight Thrower.

^^^ LOL!
Anyways, yeah, people can be idiots, and I'm all for using your knife, but use it with a little common sense, and sadly I've realized, a lot of people DON'T do this.
So, when people say "Give me a knife to use" I instantly say "Here, I'll cut it". Even if they carry a knife, I still do this. Simply because I have sharpened and seen many abused knives and seen what some people use their knives for. That and I've had people do idiotic things with my knives. So, I don't tend to lend knives lol.

I've learned to either offer to cut something for someone or carry a true beater that I don't care if they if they use on the concrete cutting board. Occasionally if I trust someone ill loan them my knife after I ask what they want I for.

The other day a co-worker asked for my knife. I asked why, and he told me he needed to open a locked door. I found him a more suitable tool.

This is why I don't let my Dad use my knives "no Dad that isn't supposed to be used to pull up laminent flooring from concrete"
