Chai Cutlery back online?

This is just a thought - one of the forum members has the entire site on his hard disk - he did it the minute he heard of JKM passing.

He was kind enough to burn it for me on a CD - 105MB zipped.

After looking at it agian I realized I would love to have it back online - as I - and many others - were so fond of the man and his site.

Do you think we can get the Mattis family approval to put it back on line- without the "salling" parts - just JKM thoughts and insights about knives and the world at large?

This can be a standig monmunet to the man..

If so - will anyone be interested in storing this space on their website?

Maybe have it here on the BF?

Anyone for the idea?

If we got enough people to chip in a buck or two, we could buy the server space and a domain name. I'm in.

I think that this is a great idea. I never had the chance to meet JKM before he passed away, but I always love reading his posts and works/thoughts in general. He sure made some amazing pictures! I think it would be a great idea, but unfortunately I don't have the space either. But I would be willing to help if it is possible. This could be a sort of way to remember him by or a memorial. Please let me know what happens with this -- its a great idea, stick to it.

Thanks,

I would gladly put in a couple of $$ as well -even more if necessary.

Who else is in?

I'll put in a few dollars. E-mail me when you decide to do it and I'll get it right to you

Just thought I'd mention that at www.onestop.net, you can get a domain name for $11 (and it comes with 10 megs free space, but with an ad bar - might not work if the site is 105 megs, but at least you can register the site for cheap).
Also - I'm not assosiated with onestop.net in any way - just wanted to help out.

You can get a real domain name for $75/two years. The hosting for a site that big should be about $20 a month. That's not cheap for one person, but we could come up with that kind of money here in no time.

The hosting service that I used to use (you have to park your site somewhere--hence the $20/month) is www.ezpublishing.com. I was paying about $8/month for a small site. But there are lots of companies out there who'll host for you--without any banners or anything, the real way--pretty cheaply. Just go to google.com and search on web hosting.

To check whether a domain is available for you to buy, go to www.networksolutions.com and click the WhoIs link at the top. That'll let you enter anything and see who, if anyone owns it.

Let's think of a tasteful, honorary name for a site--and let's get a BF mod to organize the collection!

Uhh, onestop.net is a real domain registrar. Check out www.randompicture.com for an example. You could register the site for 2 years for $22 and use the $53 left over to pay for hosting @ $20 for a little over 2 months. You only have to have the ad bar if you use their free 10 megs of space - you can always transfer the domain to a different server. (Or use their server and pay for the service, and not have to have the ad bar). Also, you can check to see if the name is taken through onestops site.
I hate to see people get ripped off by the domain registrars. My friends and I have something like 15 .com's registered, and its worked every time.

PS - there are other registrars that charge similar prices - most are just a few dollars more.

AG Russell bought the contents and rights to Chai Cutlery and was planning to put it up on his site.

A.G. many thanks. James had a lot of friends that he touched in many ways. It is a good thing that some of his words will be available to others.

Doh!!
Slap me upside the head. I goofed up. AG bought Bob Engnath's web stuff, not JKM's.
Eeeeehh! Forgive me guys. Bob and James were pals and I got them mixed up.

James Mattis - gone, but not forgotten. Play that funky 'muzak'. We still talk about him in BF chat.
