Friend came over and we built this baby off a chainsaw bar. No annealing, No heattreating. Just attacked with an angle grinder and cleanuped on the belt grinder. Then added a convex edge.

Wow is it tough and holds an edge far better than I thought it could. We were careful when we got close to the edge about heat, but still I didn't think the hardness would be conducive for a good edge.

Steve

PS I was going to put it in the ugly contest, but I don't think it would even win that.

That's a nice looking bushwacker Steve. I have a saw shop that saves their hardnose chainsaw bars for me. I use them to make Barongs. Yes they have always felt soft to me too and they take a super edge and they do hold it mych better than they should. That's without HT'ing them at all.
It just goes to show that there is much more to edge qualities than a hard edge!

Peter,

That thing is covered in grind lines - not one of them is straight. So don't come after me.

I'm not one of those hightec software geeks with the fancy knife pictures. Heck I don't even own a computer and have never even been on the Internet.

I do have a cousin, though, that saw a computer virus. He was in the hospital for a whole week.

Steve

The bar on my saw has a pretty full spectrum of colors running through the edge, caused by the friction-generated heat that can build up during hard use. In other words, I wouldn't trust it, as is, on a knife.

The edges all get cut and ground off Wulf. If you are getting it hot beyond the groove it may be time to add a little oil!:D

don't sell yourself short Steve, with the pine handle and the wood screws i think you have a contender here!:D :D :D

Yeah, it is somewhat ugly and is a contender, but it looks like a winner as far as a knife goes! Steve, you have imagination, I gotta give you that! That counts toward ugly knife contest, too! By the way, you ought to tell the guys you don't have to be ugly to make an ugly knife. This may have a few more entries into the contest. A FEW!
