Hello from wet, sticky hot Florida. Land of the 100% humidity....or so it feels.

Im trying to buy a kukri, but reading and studying info only leads to more reading and.......I wish kukri's were more widespread here so we could just walk into stores and try different length and weight kukri in our hands. At the moment I believe a sirupati with 12-15" blade and approx. 500 grams would be a good start. However, I just saw this chainpuri that is just about the same dimensions. Can you guys tell me the difference between the two models? On the HI website all I could see was the chainpuri's were longer.

Now I saw this post and it seems to be the same length as many sirupati's ive seen.

Can you guys/gals shed some light on this please.

Does it have to do with the type of tang? Do the full-tangs really disrupt the balance and use of the blade? I see so many military models sold and recommended and they are pinned grips. So, what the story.

Please forgie me if this has been written about before, I have spent over a month reading about kukri's and different houses. All on my phone, which complicates matters further. Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you, John Henry

Hey John where in FL are you? If you are nearby you can come have a look at my collection!

I've always understood that the Chainpuri was not an HI knife but made in another shop. Pala hand picks the ones that meet HI standards and Auntie offers them here. I just looked and didn't see Chainpuri at all on the website.
I could be off on this by several nautical miles but that's the way I had it figured.
Many folks here have them and many of us still want one. They seem top notch.

The Sirupati is pure HI from the get go and you can't go wrong with those. My first was a 25" from Auntie hand to hand, it's not going anywhere. One of my favorites.

Im in Stuart Fla, on the east coast. Approx 30 miles north of west palm beach.

Good news, the moderator contacted me and I will soon have one of my own. Sorry, I dont remember names and since I use my phone for internet, I would probably erase this if I tried to find it.

Thanks for the offer, even if I cant come by its a nice offer

Wonderful, it looks like my first will be a 20" sirupate. A little longer than I imagined for my first, but I think it'll be a good place to start.

Must have been Auntie / Yangdu? The 20" siru is an excellent excellent place to start. Your gonna dig it, I can feel it in my cells.

John I am clear across the state from you, near Tampa. Got a couple friends over in Stuart.

Congrats on your new siru!

I have a 20" from Tirtha Kami and its a great knife. I also have a 25" and an 11.5" and they are all users. The 20 inch is light enough to carry anywhere in the bush you want to go and very capable of shelter building and general camp tasks. Hope you like it and welcome to the forum hawk!

Sweet, thanks for the info. Great to hear that this size is so versatile.

Sounds like a real good one.r I replied to her email, saying that id be very happy to purchase it and for her to send me the paypal info. I hope im supposed to wait for a reply, or do you guys just have the info on file and send the payment? If so, please share it with me. I'm anxious to get the payment in and the knife secured.

Wait for Auntie. She'll give you the total including the shipping cost. I'm sure she's holding it for you as we speak and is just busy as usual. Give her a little time and see what happens.

Heres some eye candy while you wait! 20" Siru by Tirtha Kami up front and 20" AK by Lachhu Kami in the back.

Very nice, youre torturing me with the photos. Ill be patient, just wanted to be sure shes not waiting on me.....its happened more than once. Thank god my silky folding saw came in the mail today, ill be able to distract myself with it until the sirupati arrives. Sirupate sirupati. ......

Hi has made chainpuris, just not recently. Apparently it's not an original HI design, but when the HI kamis make one it's great.

In answer to the original question, the difference between a chainpuri and a sirupati is that the chainpuri has a iong, deep fuller, sometimes a fancier handle, and tends to be a bit pointier than the sirupati. Of course, being hand-made blades, there will be variations. Here's a picture of a fancy chainpuri that was one of my first HI knives. It was made by Lokendra, who is no longer with HI:

The photos don't do justice to the handle, which is both beautifully carved and very comfortable.

Very nice, thats an exceptional looking piece of steel. Truly exceeding the sum of its parts.

I am very happy to say that auntie did send me the PP info and said she would mail it tommorow. After spending so many hours reading about the different styles and sizes (houses too), like lightening I suddenly have one en route. Not having seen it adds a bit to the excitement. No small blade or sharpener, but I dont think ill miss them.
