I Just finished this hawk up and its getting boxed up and sent out first thing in the morning. It was made from about 10 ft. of oregon chainsaw chain, welded 1 time, folded and welded again. The handle material is peala burl, ?? on the spelling. Sorry for the poor pics, but it was getting dark and I had to hurry.

John, be on the look out and let me know when they arrive.

Thanks,

Bill

Bill;

Another great looking hawk!!! The wood is Paela Burl, I've had that piece saved back for awhile, it looks good on that damascus.

Thanks for the great work;

John

Nice, very nice!
Bill, you give a lot of us real goals to shoot for.
I've just gotten to the point where I kinda have a handle on welding up the chain and have a billet done to play with. Just planning a couple of knives from this one. I did do a RXR spike hawk recently but won't digress this thread with posting it. Raise that bar buddy!
Make the rest of us pounders reach!

?Are you using a power hammer to get the billet tightened up during welding or is it all by hand?

Thank you for sharing.

Thanks guys, ;)

Carl, I start out with a hand hammer for the first welding heat, just light taps to get all the chains closed up and stuck together, then on the next welding heat I run it through squareing dies on my 25 ton press.After a couple welding passes through the press I draw out with a power hammer at welding heats, this helps eliminate any inclusions deep inside the billet. Then I cut,fold and reweld in the squareing dies again.
From there I hand split, drift and forge to shape all at welding heats. Chainsaw chain is some hard stuff to get welded up without inclusions, so many small gaps and openings to contend with. If I was doing all my welding by hand I would draw and fold it 2 times to help eliminate inclusions. Be sure to keep that billet cleaned off and fluxed really good too.
I've hand welded several pieces of cable, and in doing that I learned patience, take your time and work small areas at a time. If I would try to get the whole piece of cable to weld in just a few heats it would be full of inclusions. Take your time, strike only at welding heats and work small areas at a time. The same goes for chain.

Good Luck and Thanks

Bill
