An O-1 chakmak I made as part of a little experiment-a chakmak that is very, very hard will produce an absolute razor edge:image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg
Incidentally, these old-school all steel chakmak make pretty good projectile weapons. This one popped outta the tongs when I was forging it and bounced of my forehead-had to go sit down for a bit, and apply some direct pressure...

That thing looks really cool! A set of a few of those with sharpened tips would be a really cool little thrower set.

That's super sweet. Be sure to wash your hands before supper or you'll get your ears pulled.

One word friend. Hottub. Or maybe that's two words Hot Tub. Hmm the crystal ball seems to prefer two words.

A nice soak to ease those tired muscles and sparkly clean hands too.

Well ok, come on over you can sit in mine, you bring the grapes. Naw forget the grapes, people will talk about us behind our backs. Scotch, bring scotch.

All you need is a black tarp, rusty truck bed, and some sunlight! Make it happen!

Is there sunshine in Vermont?

Sorry Ndog, I thought you were heading home and off the forum so we were free to talk about you behind your back. Much apologies.

You're right, Bawanna. I'm not sure if the sun ever actually makes it all the way there. Oh well... just light a fire under the truck.

You mean philllll is multi lingual and he didn't even know it? We got some real worldly folks around here.

So how is the weather in Trabzon today?

Chakmak means lighter in Turkish. Very interesting!
Indeed. :thumbup:According to Beoram on IKRHS: "chakmak (chukmuk) 'The steel for striking on flint to produce fire; -- steel for sharpening knives' [loanword from Hindi caqmaaq, originally from Turkish] (Turner, Sir Ralph Lilley. A comparative and etymological dictionary of the Nepali language.)"

Hmmmmm. I have a few pints of that clear mouth worsh in th' freezer and a nice piece of buggy spring laying around the forge.....maybe I ought to try and emulate JW. Bawanna, git thee over to Corn Patch and we'll git the fire lit and git dirty one of these afternoons....right after I finish forging a cock for a sick and ailing flint lock.

Buggy spring up our way is blister steel(carburized wrought iron). The stuff I've used is so hard you have to draw it to blue to get it to stop chipping on a brass rod-be perfect for a chakmak.
Phillll-I thought about grinding a flathead screwdriver tip on one-useful and bad to have bounced off yer noggin...btw mine still hurts lol.

Didn't know yall was into chicken fighting down there in Corn Patch way.

Few pints and some hot steel (which sadly I know nuthing about) sounds like a good time to me. I really should have took metal shop in school instead of so much wood and auto shop.

May we can drag JW down and bring some of that hard blue stuff to experiment with too?

Interesting! I just got a Chit from ahum "some competitor" and I was surprise to get a all metal Chakmak with it. When I asked, I was told that's the traditional way they used to be.

I've seen some old ones like that-it makes sense, considering how much pressure you can put on them.
