Chakmas only?

Hi Bill Oji-chan!

I was wondering today - do the kamis ever make chakmas on their own, or do they only make them as part of a khukuri/karda/chakma set? I was wondering because a chakma might be a nice thing to have as a portable steel for other knives, since it's relatively little. Does anyone use the chakmas they have on other knives?
Also, they're pretty.

I especially liked the pictures of the k&c set that Yvsa did.
Thanks for any input!

Thanks for the kind words Novadak.
I made the chakma from an old set of pruning shears and the karda from a cut down Cold Steel Red River blade.

I have a couple that's just hard enough to use on some other knives and they work just as well on them as they do on thier respective khukuri's. The kamis could make the chakmas a lot harder than they do!
I imagine there would be some breakage then if one dropped on a hard surface, but I would certanly like to see harder chakmas!! It would be nice to be able to strike sparks from flint with any of them.

My vote is for a harder chakma too. However, a lot of people like to use them for prying and other work.

It's kinda funny the sort of things we recall when we're in a state of temper huh bro.?

I bought me a chunk of iron pyrite somewhere on vacation that strikes sparks quite nicely with flint.

Of course with the lovely striker that Howard gave me at the khukuri konvention I now have a source of a much greater amount of sparks at any given time. I have some Juniper bark that has been ageing for quite sometime as well. When it is shredded it makes an excellent tender as well as an emergency personal hygene paper when all that's available are poison ivy leaves.

Ya just have to be sure it's very well shredded er ya might git a splinter.(vbeg)

Bro you can thank your Cherokee blood for making you immune to poison ivy. All the adult ndns I know are immune to it. A friend of mine and myself recently were the subject of much disbelief as we used my knife to cut and remove a poison ivy vine barehanded from a tree that some of the non-ndns present could have rubbed against.
We never had a problem with the poison ivy although several of the non-ndns swore we was gonna get it.

The chakma I had with me wasn't one of the sharpened ones so we couldn't use it to remove the poison ivy.

I had a pal that would break out if he got within six feet of the stuff. He learned the hard way -- using poison ivy as a substitute for toilet paper when we were Boy Scouts. He was laid up for a week with welts and bumps not only on the posterior but almost everywhere else. I did the same thing he did and walked home free. Ayo Cherokees!!!!

I envy you and Ysva, Bill. A couple of years ago, I was clearing the fenceline of weeds. Among the weeds was some Poison Ivy. I ended up getting the worst outbreak in my life. Definately not immune!
