Chakte Viga - stabilized or not??

About a year ago I picked up a short board of Chakta Viga from Woodcraft - and now have a call to put some it on a skinner. I have not worked with it yet .... and see several postings on the web for stabilized Chakte Viga scales ..... though the wood is very dense, and I was not **planning** on stabilizing it. Should I? or does the wood work well unstabilized and finished with wax (as I have been doing with my other exotics)?

Also, going back to 2009, there was a short thread on this wood (take note that I did *not* necropost..... :-) ), along with some comments of the dust turning your hands, as well as other surfaces in the shop purple. Is this correct??? I have pretty good multi-level dust collection going, but some small amount always seems to escape :-(

Its pH sensitive. I forget which way the specific compounds in Chakte go, but either a baking soda solution or a vinegar solution will take care of post of the color staining.

huh ... cool. it must contain a compound closely related to Phenolphthalein?? I wear gloves when working with wood like this anyway .... so just wondering....

Thanks Ben
