Took the day off of work today to do a little woods bumming... So I grabbed my little Rossi .22/.410 matched pair and headed to the nearest WMA. in search of rabbits....Didn't turn up any rabbits, But I did kick up a nice ring neck pheasant,,This was my first successfull hunt of the season ( i know I'm a late starter) any how..with the rash of thread we've had lately discussing the .410 I thought I bring this up. the guy flushed at distance of about 10 paces I saw him before he flushed so I was ready...He was dead before he hit the ground.. Now that;s close distance to be sure..but It worked like a charm..using 3 inch # 6's. Left after I cleaned him up, he was a big bird, and I didn;t want to be greedy.
Any how I cleaned him using my standard mora #1 here are some pics
(Camera died half way through..had to wait till I got home to charge it )
here's a lake I encountered,

Congrats on the bird RR. I think you need a 3rd mora for your kit though.

All right, Riley,,, a .410 ? Where the hell's the bow? Or the throwing stick? Or the atlatl? The sling, bola, Apache throwing star, snare, deadfall......................

lol, yea, where is the primitive ways of getting game. :p

Nice bird, bud

Doc, LOL...I wish it was legal to hunt with primitive implements,,, I'd never get anything..but oh the fun of it...incidentally 1 of the things I;m liking about the .410 is that as a short range weapon it forces you to develop your stalking skill...I;ve had to pass up quite a few shots over the past few weeks, as Ijust couldnt get close enough, but today was worth it.

right on RR... great stuff man.. looks like a fun day to me..:) congrats on the bird.. if all goes as planned, i might be doing some quail hunting in the next few weeks... i'm also getting a Ruger 10/22 soon too.. :)

okay, okay...gotcha, you're good at stalking. So you get that shiner from a pissed squirrel....peeping into its nest :D

never said I was good at it..LOL....Thanks for the kind words guys.. seriously though I remember there being several threads discussing the value of a .410, and I have a few observations... 1) I think within 60 feet it is a great small game round.
2) I think .410 gets bad press because most are full choke, such a smal charge needs a chance to spread out to cover a maximum area within its limited range. not held together... to make it go further
3) #6 is the heaviest shot I'd use.

That is a great gun, my son uses one and loves it. Actually it is hard to get it out of my father in laws hands once we are out shooting.

Good stuff John

What's up with the shiner under the left eye ... lol ?

Very true. There is a wide spread misconception that a .410 is a good choice for beginners. Not so, it is a weapon best suited to the skilled hunter.

It looks like you had a good day. I really like a .410 and spent many a day packing one quail hunting. My Dad hunted quail with one exclusively for probably 40 years outside of a few that he carried a 28ga.

IIRC the effective range for a 12ga is about 10 yards further than the .410 but that's mainly because the 12ga rounds have more shot. Since the .410 has a smaller number of pellets it means you have to be more accurate and that's where a lot of the bad rap comes from.

Congrats...mmmmm pheasant. If you are hitting birds with a 410 already you are gonna be a natural at hunting.

Weak guard? :p
Nice shot gun btw. I may look into getting a single shot to play around with soon. Can you compare it to the H&R's?

Tell your instructor to use the heavy bag, not your eye next time, John! Good eats too! Btw, thanks for the ewok lend, I'm a proud owner now!

The H&R 's are a little better gun in my opinion but there is one thing I like about the rossi. They build the 410 on a 410 size frame not the one size for all for a H&R which makes for a lighter gun my youth size rossi 410 weighs 3.36 lbs my H&R youth 410 is 6.01 lbs. I agree with not using any shot bigger than #6
Do You have A 22 barrel with your gun RescueRiley?
