I decided to make time and enter the challenge over on the Wilderness forum. Everyone is probably going to make the same exposed tang knife with slab handles so I decieded to make something to make something a bit different. I had always worked with 1095, and wanted to change that a bit too. I forged a slender blade something like you would have seen on a hunter from the 60's or 70's. It was from 52100 but I failed completely in the heat treat. The steel was very soft and would not hold an edge. I had put the knife in a handle that I really liked.
The handle is something like a Wayne Goddard style. A hidden tang blade in a wood handle. The center of the scales are cut out to fit the tang and then everything is glued and pinned together. But the blade heat treat was awful. I deceided to go back to a steel I knew for the challange but with a new twist. This 1095 has been triple quenched and triple tempered. I also deceided to retain the handle and then I designed the knife blade around the handle. This is opposite for me, I have always focused on the blade and handles are designed last. I will post more pics of the handle as I make it.
I have made a frame from micarta and it will be epoxied to the hidden tang. Stay tuned for the blade grind and handle material!
