Here's one you don't see too often, a Challenge Cutl Co barehead jack. It was so rusty that you could only make out the C in Challenge and about half of Bridgeport on the tang. Ths wasn't as bad as it seems because I got it with a really crappy Ideal hollow handle barlow, for thirteen bucks!:D  A little elbow grease and this is what I've come up with: (There's a barely discenible etch on the master that says- CHALLENGE in fairly fancy lettering over reg U.S. pat.)

These are the kind of knives I like to get. It is really nice to get a knife and give it some TLC and see what happens. Very nice knife do you know how old it is? Thanks for sharing.

Super jack! Is it an ebay find? $13 bucks is astounding!!

Thanks folks! It was made sometime between 1905 and 1928.

Yes Charlie, it's off ebay. The interesting thing is someone actually asked if there was a marking on the tang, and the seller replied that there wasn't, but he was quite sure it was a barlow:eek: :) . I figured I'd take a gamble because with the blades this full I didn't expect the tang stamp to be worn down.

At that price you got a great deal. I have several Challenge knives, and they are all well made, quality examples of cutlery.

Gotta love those old swedges Blues!

Got that right.

The spine on the Waterville is 5mm, just about 3/16".

What's the width of the spine of the Challenge?

You gambled and won my friend! Looks like a hundred bucks!!

Thanks Charlie! Unfortunately the ones I gamble on and loose always seem to cost MUCH more:grumpy: . I tell ya I really love these old knives!

3mm on the spine Blues, you've got one hefty knife there!

Eric

Thanks, Eric.

Yeah, that one really surprised me when my friend sent it. A stout one for sure.

those old challenge knives were well made. I have a couple out in the shop somewhere in my parts bins in need of work. Here is a barehead jack that passed through my hands a while ago. The blades aren't nearly as full as yours though.
