Although this has probably been posted numerous times, I couldn't find what I was looking for in old threads.
I am looking at the Chambriard knives, specifically the Compagnon and the Compact, I have been researching these for a while, and still, after months of deliberation, cannot decide.
Are there any advice/pros and cons/preference that anyone could offer?
Prices of the two are relatively the same, between 100-130$ so that isn't much of a factor, but specs, and EDC functionality is always nice to know.

Things I am interested in,
Accessibility/Easy to open
Bladeplay
Symmetry
Grind
Reliability
Maintenance
Rusting
Well Made?

Thanks for your input!

Hello, I've got both of these knives, Le Compagnon in Ebony and Le Compact in Stag.

Firstly, they are excellently finished knives and having distal taper they are superb slicers.

Very easy to open but very hard to close (this is good in my book) the snap is ferocious so stand clear. :D Sandvik stainless wont cause any rust problems and sharpens up satisfyingly. I think there are carbon versions on some models.

The file-work is typical French high-grade work, looks nice. No rough or sharp edges except the blade and the protruding tang. But, they come with a very snug soft leather pouch so your pockets wont suffer.

As to size Le Compact is a pocket-knife and very handy indeed. Le Compagnon might only sound a bit bigger on paper but it's a large knife. It's OK for those with very large hands but I regard it as a more pack or travelling knife. It's my 'go to' pic nic outdoor food knife. First class slicer of salami, sausage, cheese, large fruits such as melon and rolls or loaves. Very safe and secure in the hand and that strong backspring won't give you a fright. It is easy to open though.

Choice of handle materials is extensive. Snakewood, Ebony, Juniper, Oak, Walnut, Box, Stag, Horn.

I don't think you'll be disappointed!

Thanks, Will

Ever since a member posted pics of their Chambriard knives I've had a juniper Compact on my wish list. Looks like a great knife, now if I could just find that thread...

I don't own any Chambriads, but own a couple of laguiole, one with juniper scales. I recommend the juniper very nice to look at and gives off a very nice fragrant aroma, which doesn't seem to fade, I have had mine for 12 years. I am a carbon guy, but the only stainless I like is 12c27 sandvik, takes a very keen smooth edge.

Here's a start. It may not be the thread you're looking for, but it does contain a nice comparative picture of a Trapper, Companion, and Compact (excuse my English:)).

Video review of a Compact.

Yes, Stefan's video gives an excellent indication of the size difference of these two knives. He also previews their Le Trappeur , a giant of a lockback that dwarfs the other two:eek::D

+1 for the Compact. Awesome knife (not that the Compagnon isn't as good, it's just a personal preference).
