WIP of a champagne knife. I’ve got it to the point of being functional. I’m not totally happy with the foil cutter. Learning along the way on this build. The nail nick I hate as well on the foil cutter so back to the drawing board there. Good thing is I often cut parts for two knives when prototyping new to me patterns. I’ll need to place a nail nick for the foil cutter pre heat treat as I often use a stone to grind them in. This one I think I’ll make a punch. The knick has to be short and deep. I could use a dovetail cutter as well I guess 🤔

Anyways this is where I’m at with it. Hoping to have it available to present at the Solvang Show in 2024. 🥵

Nice corkscrew!! Not many (any?) seen on custom knives!!
Thanks Charlie!! Not many is right. Only a few makers I know that have made them recently. One on a sportsman and on a horsemans. It’s been fun figuring out this tricky little knife.

I'd love to see some WIP pics of a corkscrew being made!!
Wound, filed, twisted??? I've always wondered how it's done!!

From round stock. 1/2” tape wrapped to mark cut lines with a jewelers saw. Then triangle file. Then round file to final profile.

I used square stock this time and chucked it in my mini lathe to turn round. Then hand filed the rest.

Thanks David!! The pics make it very clear how it is done!!
I also watched a youtube of forging a "worm"!!
I am ready to appreciate corkscrews done by others - not me!!! ;)

Getting closer. This spring took me a bit to work out. But moving forward. Black lip pearl scales for the win. Maybe I’ll have this completed this weekend. This will be headed to the Solvang Custom Knife Show in April. Thanks for looking. I’ll update again once it’s completed. Happy New Year y’all

Interesting read! It look very complicated and time consuming- thanks for the WIP pics

Final update is here. Happy to have the first knife of 2024 completed. This will be on my table at the Solvang Custom knife show in April.

JA Henkels pattern Champagne knife in Black Lip MOP. Cpm-154 steel for blades, springs and corkscrew. Closed length is 3”

Thanks for looking. Apologies ahead of time for the lighting. It was difficult to capture the beauty of this pearl.
