I just was wondering what is the best way to east the edge of the spine?

They described a champher as melting the edge.....?

Are you talking about chamfering the corners of the spine of your blade?

Doesn't involve heat....unless you lean into the grinder for too long... :D :p

In pistols these days it's popular to "melt" the edges, taking off the sharp 90 degree edges by rounding them .Or you could chamfer them , that is cut a flat on the edge, 45 degrees to the side. Personally the chamfer looks better. I think blgoode means ease instead of east, but a chamfer is flat ( unless they changed that word too, no english in this country anymore) melting is round.

The easiest way to do it, either flat beveled or rounded, would probably be on a belt grinder. Use a flat platen for flat or the slack belt for rounded. You can also do it by hand with stones, files, or sandpaper.

For some consistent results -- put your blade in a vise sticking straight up, edge facing towards you. Use a cut up piece of grinder belt (1-inch belts work good) and use it to sand away like you're on some sort of skiing work-out machine. (for a writer, I sure have a poor way with words. :D )

Kinda like they're doing to the handle on the second page of "let's build a little skinner" on this page: http://www.customknifedirectory.com/CKD_TutorialFrameset.htm?CKD_Tutorials.htm~tmain

Scotchbrite belts are good for this also. They aren't too aggressive so you won't eat up the blade too fast.

Gib, I think what Mete is talking about is what we used to call dehorning.....pre pray and spray days.

After cutting off the hammer spur I would use a slack belt to get the larger angles and emery cloth to get the smaller ones. Just hit the edge enough to slightly round it so it didn't dig into my dainty skin under my shirt (or down my pants :o )

It's a lot easier with the pocket triphammers everyone is so fond of these days!

Peter, I have to ask...is that a picture of you in your avatar? Your skin dont look too dainty.

thanks guys.....Just what I thought...More hand work :)
