Brothers of the knife....ebay has changed way they display bidders. All we will see from now on is first and last letters or numbers with *** inbetween. Will have to be careful if you are one that hates to bid against Buck brother from this site. FYI 300$s

Well.... I am not sure that is entirely correct. I think the user names are truly random, meaning that gd526 did not show up as g***6 when viewed elsewhere. Before the new policy, I pretty much would be happy for a Brother claiming one- even if I was the second place guy (right Mister 45 and the Colt?);) Remember, you also would be able to see a Brother bump the bid too.:grumpy: I liked being able to see who's who but I usually drop a line or email if I think I will be battling a Friend the whole time or something involving sniping. It is an auction and for the most part, nothing really changes.....To the Victor goes the spoils!

........and yeah I know, 'Trax, one can check the feedback numbers to finely narrow down who might be bidding. The numbers stay with the user.

g***6 (117+)

I've been seeing the Bidder1, Bidder2, etc for quite some time now...Seems like it's items that go over $200, but I haven't paid a lot of attention to it...or why...Just another eBay annoyance...

The matching feedback scores goes out the window unless you keep up on their totals...

You are right, I checked an item that I know for a fact, the only bid is from a fellow member here. The name displayed is truly random, and does not include the first and last letters of his Ebay User ID.

I guess I can see the ups and downs of this new system, but it sure will make it harder to avoid bidding against each other. :thumbdn:

...Yep...Seems like all the auctions are using the random name generator now regardless of the item cost...Only time you'll see an actual bidder's name is after the high "bidder" wins...Yer right TLC...Gonna be tough knowing who yer biddin' against now...:(

Maybe that's why they're changing. Maybe they found out that we wouldn't bid agin each other and want to get the price up as high as possible. The days of looking for a bargain might be over. And, since this forum won't allow us to use the eBay link, how we gonna keep track of who's doin' what?

My personal code is that if I step on a someone I know is from around here - unknowingly of course - I will then work at finding them another equal example and vice a versa. have a couple of those sitting on my shoulders now, really they are pal deals, you know you help me I'll help you..... Rule 1. frist bird dog on point has priority.....

300$s

If I step on someone, I'd hope they send me a note. I'll let them have it for what it cost me, if they want. I doubt that anything I can afford to bid on will bend any one too far out of shape. I usually bid what I think is fair and let it ride. No last instant sniping. If I get it, fine. If I don't, oh well.........
There just seems that there ought to be a way to keep track of each other, though.

...I've always avoided bidding against any member of the forum and their "visibility" on the auction site was great to see. Like Trax said the feedback numbers aren't gonna be a great help at all either. I like Rudderjt's and 300Bucks ideas. They'll work for me too...:)

They are also starting to enforce their no weapons policy. The froze my account because I sell my Jaw Jackers. I was told that they consider knives weapons and know at least one knife maker who had his account frozen. Check out www.gearpay.com as an alternative. They will not get anymore of my money when they discriminate against my hobby.- George

Not sure what's going on with some sellers, but neither Ebay or PayPal is banning knives or the use of their service to pay for them.

Straight from Paypal.

KNIVES
In general, you may use PayPal in the legal sale of knives, subject to the following exceptions:

* Switchblade Knives. You may not use PayPal in the sale of switchblade knives. A switchblade knife is defined as any knife that resembles a pocketknife with a blade that can be released automatically or by use of a trigger. Other names for switchblades include spring-blade knife, snap-blade knife, gravity knife, and butterfly knife.

* Disguised Knives. You may not use PayPal in the sale of knives disguised to look like a harmless item. This includes, but is not limited to: belt buckle knives, cane swords, shobi-zue, lipstick case knives, air gauge knives, and writing pen knives.

It seems the problem is that many individuals have been contacting non-winning bidders after the auction has ended and have been offering them the same/similar item for their original bid price which obviously has left ebay out of the loop and out of their profit share, hence, the new policy so that bidders are not longer identifiable.

The best way to buy/sell a Buck I think is to use the forum here if at all possible....I havent sold any Buck yet,but if I ever do Ill list it here first..

There's another thread on this; I posted this email received from ebay about the new policy:

Important new buyer identity protection

Keeping eBay your trusted source for great deals and truly unique finds is important to all of us. Toward this end, we're making an important change:

Soon we will no longer display the complete user IDs of people bidding on any auction-style listing. Instead, we'll use asterisks such as x***y to protect our members' identities. Sellers will continue to see complete user IDs on their listings and the winning bidder's ID will be visible to everyone after the auction ends.

We haven't provided this information on listings of $200 or higher for some time and it's been a very effective fraud deterrent for those items. For safety reasons, we're now expanding this protection to all auction-style listings.

We know many of you like to see who you're bidding against. But displaying this information makes it too easy for scammers to send out fake offers that include convincing details of your actual bidding activity on a specific listing, such as the item number, description and exact amount you bid.

In recent weeks fraudulent email offers targeting listings under $200 has surged unacceptably. To keep eBay a top shopping destination we must choose safety over visibility and nip this in the bud. We recognize for some of you this may be an unwelcome limitation but we hope you'll support our putting more muscle into fraud prevention.

Sincerely,

eBay Global Trust & Safety Team

P.S. Safety tip: using an email address that is similar to your user ID also makes it easier for scammers to contact you. If your user ID makes it easy to guess your email address, it's worth changing your user ID in My eBay -> My Account -> Personal Information.

There is definitely some truth to this. I had someone contact me through ebay just the other day. They were saying that my primary email must be nearly the same as their email address. They also said that every time I bid on something, they get an email. So, they were assuming, and hoping that I would fall for it, that my Ebay user ID was that same as the unique part of my email address. Since it is not the same, it made this message very suspicious. If it were the same, this would have been easy to fall for. To try and shorten a long story, they flat out asked me for my primary email address, probably to spam my ass off. So that I am not hijacking the thread...hiding bidder user IDs sucks. It takes away alot of the fun of bidding and watching items.

I may be seeing a consistent pattern to this new hidden bidder thing, I am currently the highest bidder on 2 auctions, and when I look at them without logging in, I see the same hidden bidder alias on both.

If this holds up, maybe we can revise our list to include all three?

I'll use myself as an example.

BF Name:Bear Claw Chris Lappe
Ebay Name:Borangzen
Hidden bidder alias:b***g

Might be a work around their new system for us fellow forumites???

Interesting TLC, it looks as if I'm b***n for the two auctions I'm leading. We'll see...

I just checked 2 that I am the high bidder on and I am t***k. It will be interesting to see if that follows me on every auction. Might just mean that we all have yet another list we keep track of? Wonderful! :grumpy:
